During training exercises, the green lieutenant (陸軍中尉) was driving down a muddy back road. He encountered another car stuck in the mud with a red-faced colonel at the wheel. “Your jeep stuck, sir?” asked the lieutenant as he pulled along side. “Nope,” replied the colonel, coming over and handing him the keys. “Yours is.”

Now that story might give you a chuckle (輕聲地笑), but isn?t that the way most people want to handle their problems, but handing the keys to someone else when something happens in their daily life? By nature we neither want to admit that something was our fault nor do we want to take the imitative and responsibility to fix it. Our tendency is to try to run away from it and hand it off to someone else to solve.

One of the fundamental principles of sailing on the sea is that when you get into a storm, head into the wind. If you run from it, you will be caught by the storm from behind. If you turn sideways, you will capsize (傾覆). But only by meeting it head on, can you have the best chance to ride out the storm and overcome it.

Life is that way. We will never conquer our fears, sins, problems, the giants in our lives by running away. Those giants will always be there just like Goliath(圣經(jīng)人物) was there every day taunting(嘲諷), and challenging. The only way that we can overcome and conquer the giants in our lives is to do as little David the shepherd boy did. He quickly ran out and faced his giant. So we must face our problems. Face your giant. Acknowledge it and address it. Only by facing the giant can we overcome it.

    1. Why did the colonel deny his jeep being stuck in the mud?

    A. Because he didn?t want to face the fact that he was in trouble.

    B. Because it was not his jeep but the lieutenant?s that was stuck.

    C. Because the lieutenant tended to laugh at him instead of helping.

    D. Because he wouldn?t like the lieutenant to mind his business.

    2. The underlined word “giants” refers to the following EXCEPT ???.

    A. storm at sea ?????? B. fear of failure

    C. a car stuck in mud ?? D. something valuable

    3. Which can best describe the main idea of this passage?

    A. Run from your giants, rather than facing them directly.

    B. Don?t do anything that will only cause trouble to you.

    C. When Goliath hits David?s right cheek, he turns the left cheek to him.

    D. As Goliath moved closer to attack, David quickly ran out to meet him.

    B

The front-yard kitchen gardens, with everything from vegetables to salad greens, are a source of food, a topic of conversation with the neighbors. Although people have been growing food in their backyards forever, front-yard vegetable gardens are a growing outlet (出路) for people whose backyards are too shady or too small, as well as those who want to spread their beliefs one tomato at a time.

Fritz Haeg, an artist and architect, has done yards in Kansas, California and New Jersey as part of a project called “Edible Estates”. Haeg, who is working on a book, Edible Estates: Attack on the Front Lawn, due out in 2008, has been flooded by the response. He gets hundreds of e-mails every month from people who want to be next.

Some of the neighbors are less than excited. Some municipal codes (城市法規(guī)) limit the percentage of a yard that can be planted with anything other than trees and grass.

“Especially in the first three years, I got a lot of code violations,” said Bob Waldrop of Oklahoma City. He planted his corner lot almost entirely with fruit trees, berry bushes and vegetables.

Zappia turned the front yard of the home he and his wife rent in Santa Monica, Calif. into a vegetable garden, with his landlord?s permission. He estimates it supplies 35 to 40 percent of the food they eat. Zappia took a master gardening class at the East Los Angeles University of California, which focused on growing food.

The gardens don?t cost much to plant. Zappia estimates he spent about $100 on the garden and says he and his wife save about $200 to $300 a year on their food costs. Waldrop, in Oklahoma City, said the garden?s organic fruit allowed him to eat in a way he could never afford if he bought everything at the grocery store.

    4. Which of the following is NOT true according to the first two paragraphs?

    A. People can grow vegetables in their front-yard if their back-yards are too shady.

    B. Fritz Haeg is a person who is an artist but not a builder.

    C. Fritz Haeg is working on a book which is due out in 2008.

About two years ago, eight-year-old Trisha Rao was worried about her upcoming school exams, so she turned to poetry to help work through her feelings and give herself confidence as she prepared for the tests. “It was a good way to make me stay calm,” Rao says.

While listening to the news with her father, Rao learned about the war in Syria. Conditions in the country were tough, and many people were leaving for safer areas. “I was sad that they lost their homes and some of them lost their family,” Rao said.

It made Rao think. If the poem she had written the night before her test had given her hope, maybe it could do the same for the refugee (難民) children. Rao worked on her poem and turned it into a book called Believe in Yourself with the help of her family and friends. It follows the tales of Sunshine the pup (小狗) (based on Rao?s real-life Cocker Spaniel of the same name) and Papa Dog. Each page presents a lesson on topics such as overcoming difficulties, working hard, and of course, believing in one?s self.

“I feel that the Syrian refugee children need to hear a message of hope,” she says. “I?m happy that I was able to write this book and share this message with them.”

The refugee children have accepted Rao?s encouraging message so enthusiastically that the Istanbul Centre for Support to Life has begun translating Rao?s book into Arabic so they?ll be able to read it in their own language. Believe in Yourself has also earned Rao a prize from the Independent Publishers Book Awards for Best Children?s eBook.

In order to get Believe in Yourself into the hands of as many children as possible, Rao and her family have promised to donate a copy of the book to a refugee child for every copy sold.

    8. How did poetry affect Rao when she was eight?

    A. It helped her believe in herself. B. It broadened her outlook on life.

    C. It offered her enthusiasm and skills. D. It made her achieve excellent grades.

    9. What can we learn about Believe in Yourself?

    A. It discusses a variety of refugee problems. B. It was completely finished by Rao herself.

    C. It aims to encourage refugee children. D. It was based on Rao?s own story.

    10. How did the public react to Rao?s book?

    A. They had doubts about it. B. They thought highly of it.

    C. They had mixed opinions on it. D. They were unconcerned about it.

    11. What is the best title for the text?

    A. A Lesson from a Girl B. The Pleasure of Giving

    C. Sharing Hope with Refugees D. Exploring the Well-being of Refugees

Every time author Alex Brown has released a book I have wasted no time in jumping straight in. I have always been honest about not being a fan of short stories as I have found them to be lacking in depth for me but when I saw that Alex Brown was bringing out a short story named Not Just for Christmas set in her much loved village of Tindledale I knew there was no way I could miss out on another visit to the village.

The main character in this short story is Kitty who appeared in the previous Tindledale books running her café The Spotted Pig Café. Kitty is a single mother of the lovely little Teddie after her husband died a true hero. Kitty and Teddie have adapted to life but then Kitty receives a phone call from Mack who was her husband?s best friend, with news that her husband?s dog Monty has been retired ?and needs a home. Will Monty bring everlasting love to the family or will he bring up too many memories for Kitty?

I am over the moon that this book focuses on Kitty?s story as she is a character who has touched my heart in the Tindledale books and I have really wanted the author to explore her character more. The storyline is very moving but also uplifting too with a lovely touch of celebration.

This is the first short story I have read where the author has managed to put all of the feeling of a full length novel into a short story. The characters are well developed and soon work their way into your heart. The storyline also has great depth of feeling thanks to the challenging topics the author deals with. There are some touching moments and the one that really touched my heart was the comment Teddie made about her father.

It?s actually quite amazing how much happens in such a short story, but none of it feels rushed.

    12. Which statement is the author?s view according to Paragraph 1?

    A. He couldn?t get the story?s deep thoughts.

    B. He has always been interested in short stories.

    C. He didn?t expect to visit the village of Tindledale.

    D. He was looking forward to Alex Brown?s new book.

    13. ?What does the underlined expression in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A. In high spirits. B. Burning with curiosity.

    C. Super sad and worried. ???????? D. Very touched and satisfied.

    14. What can we learn about Not Just for Christmas?

    A. Its storylines are pretty simple. B. It is in fact an amusing comedy.

    C. It focuses on Kitty and her dog Monty. D. Its characters soon win the heart of readers.

    15. What moment touched the author most?

    A. A lovely touch of celebration. ??? B. Kitty?s warm welcome to Monty.

    C. Monty?s everlasting love to the family.

    D. Teddie expressing her opinion about her father.

    II. 根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。(10分)

“Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain but it takes character and self control to be understanding and forgiving.”-Dale Carnegie

If we really want to be happy, why do we act like such babies?

We can claim to be proactive(主動的) in our life by settings goals and going after what we want. But if we?re always whining and complaining all the time, are we really living effectively?

1??Whether it be being stuck in traffic, being bothered by the weather, not enough mustard on your sandwich, or whatever it is, there are endless instances where you can find a reason to complain.

But it?s not just outside circumstances that we complain about. ?2?. We complain that we don?t have enough time, we don?t have enough money (this one is huge because it?s often “true”), that we?re not smart enough, cool enough, or just enough.

3??I never really thought about it much until I found this website about “l(fā)iving in a complain free world.”

Imagine how much happier you would be if you simply stopped complaining? Much of what you complain about is outside of your control anyway. What?s the point of brooding about something you have no power to change? ?4

Simply becoming conscious of how much you complain is the first step to stopping. When you recognize that you?re complaining, stop and take notice of it. Ask yourself if you would rather complain, or be happy.

    5

    A. We complain about ourselves too.

    B. Not very intelligent, if you ask me.

    C. Why can?t we complain about things around us?

    D. Are you ready to live a complaint—free, happier life?

    E. What you?re complaining about may make you quite unhappy.

    F. If you don?t believe me, count how many times you complain in one day.

    G. I?ve experienced lots of unpleasantness for complaining about things I can?t control.

I had to be at hotel in the early morning to help with breakfast. People were supposed to serve themselves at breakfast, so some people wanted me to do everything for us. I remember one man who keeps ordering me to get his food and demanded things we did not serve.
