In ancient times the most important examinations were spoken, not written. In the schools of ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually consisted of saying poetry aloud or giving speeches.

In the European universities of the Middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their field of study with people who had made a special study of the subject. This custom exists today as part of the process of testing candidates (應(yīng)試者) for the doctors degree.

Generally, however, modern examinations are written. The written examination, where all students are tested on the same questions, was probably not known until the nineteenth century. Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in population and the development of modern industry. A room full of candidates for a state examination, timed exactly by electric clocks and carefully watched over by teachers, resembles a group of workers at a factory. Certainly, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act like machines.

One type of test is sometimes called as “objective” test. It is intended to deal with facts, not personal opinions. To make up an objective test the teacher writes a series of questions, each of which has only one correct answer. Along with each question the teacher writes the correct answer and also three statements that look like answers to students who have not learned the material properly.

    4. What can we learn about the students in the Middle Ages?

    A. They took objective tests.

    B. They usually took spoken tests.

    C. They specialized in one subject.

    D. They were timed by electrical clocks.

    5. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?

    C. Workers now take examinations.

    D. Teachers participate in the exams.

    6. What test requires students to choose the answer from several choices?

    A. Objective test. B. Subjective test.

    C. Spoken test. D. Written test.

    7. It can be concluded that testing .

    A. should test more facts

    B. should always be written

    C. is given in some factories

    D. has changed since Middle Ages

I first met Paul Newman in 1968, when George Roy Hill, the director of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, introduced us in New York City. When the studio didnt want me for the film—it wanted somebody as well-known as Paul—he stood up for me. I dont know how many people would have done that; they would have listened to their agents or the studio powers.

The friendship that grew out of the experience of making that film and The Sting four years later had its root in the fact that although there was an age difference, we both came from a tradition of theater and live TV. We were respectful of craft (技藝) and focused on digging into the characters we were going to play. Both of us had the qualities and virtues that are typical of American actors: humorous, aggressive, and making fun of each other—but always with an underlying affection. Those were also at the core (核心) of our relationship off the screen.

We shared the belief that if youre fortunate enough to have success, you should put something back—he with his Newmans Own food and his Hole in the Wall camps for kids who are seriously ill, and me with Sundance and the institute and the festival. Paul and I didnt see each other all that regularly, but sharing that brought us together. We supported each other financially and by showing up at events.

I last saw him a few months ago. Hed been in and out of the hospital. He and I both knew what the deal was, and we didnt talk about it. Ours was a relationship that didnt need a lot of words.

    8. Why was the studio unwilling to give the role to the author at first?

    A. Paul wanted the role.

    B. He wasnt famous enough.

    C. The director had found someone else.

    D. The studio powers didnt like his agent.

    9. Why did Paul and the author have a lasting friendship?

    A. They were of the same age.

    B. They were both good actors.

    C. They worked in the same theater.

    D. They have similar characteristics.

    10. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

    A. Their belief. B. Their care for children.

    C. Their success. D. Their support for each other.

    11. What is the authors purpose in writing the text?

    A. To remember a friend.

    B. To show his love of films.

    C. To introduce a new movie.

    D. To share his acting experience.

    D

Movie-goers might have seen the real-life ordeal (嚴(yán)峻的考驗) played out in Jungle where Daniel Radcliffe played Ghinsberg who fought for his life in the Bolivian jungle. The backpacker had become separated from his companions and survived for three weeks before being rescued by the local people from a nearby village.

A fearless explorer, Ghinsberg did several jobs to realize his dream of traveling around South America. Once there, he met with Karl Ruprechter, a mysterious Austrian geologist in search of gold, Swiss teacher Marcus Stamm, and American photographer Kevin Gale—the four had never met before. They joined up for the expedition (探險) into the Amazon, but the dream turned into a nightmare which caused the group to split.

Ghinsberg and Gale built a raft to take them to the nearest town, but after losing control, Ghinsberg ended up downstream. After four days heading upriver in search of his companions, he finally concluded they were both lost. Ruprechter and Stamm were never found.

With no knife, map or survival skills, 21-year-old Ghinsberg spent three weeks seeking shelter and food. After his rescue, Ghinsberg was cared for by the native Quechua-Tacana community of San Jose. But the San Jose villagers were also fighting for survival themselves, as Ghinsberg discovered. They needed other sources of income and dreamed of building a hostel (招待所) to encourage tourism in their large area of Madidi National Park and provide employment for their children. Ghinsberg felt he owed his life to this remote community and decided to help them.

To raise money, he went knocking on the doors of the Inter-American Development Bank and the environmental NGO, Conservation International. Thanks to Ghinsbergs effort, the villagers dream of bringing tourism to Madidi became a reality.

Jane Eyre was published in 1847. It is not just a romance novel, but an educational story. Women can learn so much from this great Victorian heroine. This is not to suggest that Jane didnt have shortcomings.

You can overcome your past, however bad it is. Jane Eyre is made miserable as a child by her horrible relatives.? He constantly reminds her that shes an orphan (孤兒). But she learns a lot about letting go when she is sent to a boarding school and makes friends with Helen.

Jane notes, “The world was a varied field of hopes and excitement waiting for those who had the courage to go forth.” If Jane hadnt been brave, she might have returned to the cruel woman who raised her.

Dont be afraid to speak your mind. She is not scared to voice her opinions when necessary. It is much better to talk about things than to hide unspoken anger.

Be positive. When Jane was younger, she had a tendency to feel sorry for herself.? But as she gets older, she learns to be happy despite her past.

So they created one of the most influential companies in the world. The word “google” has even entered our vocabulary as a verb. Now, find out the true history of Google—from its beginnings through its revolution to a brief glimpse (瞥見) of where they might take us next.

The Soul Keepers by Devon Taylor

Rhett always thought that death was the end of everything. But after he dies, he discovers its only the beginning. He awakens in the afterlife and is employed to make a voyage to ferry (擺渡) the souls of the dead. To where exactly, no one knows. But they must protect them from evil soul-eating monsters. Rhett and his new friends have a hard enough time fighting back the monsters.

Anyone who reads a book and then goes to see a movie based on that book generally leaves the movie feeling a little disappointed. Why might this be? Both books and movies serve the purpose of entertainment. Both books and movies offer characters and plots. And, both books and movies provide a setting for a story. Books, however, offer a more attractive and complex form of entertainment than movies.

Although movies are entertaining to watch, books have advantages over them. First, books, in comparison with movies, can more easily catch hold of the depths of characters and create a complex setting through the use of rich description. Books leave it up to the reader to interpret, imagine, and recreate the story in his or her own mind. However, movies are action packed and provide lots of visual stimuli (視覺刺激); still, it is the movie not the viewer that interprets the characters, plot and setting. Second, books are not limited to time. A writer can write as much or as little as necessary in order to create and tell a story. Movies, on the other hand, are limited to an hour and a half to two hours of entertaining time before the audience begins to get restless. Last, reading is an intellectual form of entertainment. Readers can improve their level of reading and vocabulary in a harmless, healthy, and pleasurable way. Movies, on the other hand, are not as complex and entertaining as books, and they leave nothing to interpret. Therefore, the advantages and entertainment value of books outweigh those of movies.

To conclude, books, through interpretation, help the reader develop a sense of relationship to the characters and the story itself, but movies entertain strictly. Books are a better form of entertainment than movies.

    4. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?

    A. Movies are usually time limited.

    B. Books provide more visual stimuli.

    C. Books leave readers nothing to interpret.

    D. Movies can easily catch the depths of characters.

    5. The underlined word “intellectual” in Paragraph 2 may relate to ___ .

    A. training B. learning

    C. translating D. speaking

    6. What is the authors idea about books and movies?

    A. Movies often make people disappointed.

    B. Both books and movies entertain strictly.

    C. Books have many advantages over movies.

    D. Movies and books are similar in many aspects.

    7. What can be the best title for the text?

    A. Movies: Easy Form of Entertainment

    B. Books: Better Form of Entertainment

    C. Why Are We Disappointed at Movies?

    D. How to Produce Movies Based on Books?

    C

“Who does the cooking in your home?” Im often asked by my colleagues. “My wife and I share it 50/50,” I usually say without hesitation.

Its a lie, of course. Were pretty much even (相等的) when it comes to the children and the elderly. But the paying of bills isnt 50/50—my wife pays all sorts of household expenses, so I never even have to set eyes on them. And the cooking isnt 50/50, either.
