A lot of earthquakes happen in the world every year. Why do earthquakes happen? Scientists tell us the outside of the earth is made of a number of different plates (板塊). The plates move very slowly. Sometimes they stop and dont move for a long time. When some of the earths plates move suddenly, an earthquake happens.
Many earthquakes happen under the sea. Sometimes they happen near mountains. In fact, earthquakes may happen anywhere on the earth.
During an earthquake, the shakings make rocks rise suddenly and even break open. Houses fall. People are killed or hurt. Sometimes whole villages or cities are destroyed.
Can we do something to keep ourselves safe from earthquakes? Scientists have studied earthquakes and made maps that show “earthquake belts”. In the areas in these belts, its possible for earthquakes to happen. In these areas we can make houses strong enough to stand against earthquakes.
In the future, scientists will be able to predict (預(yù)言) exactly when and where an earthquake will happen. They can tell us what to do and how to do it as well.

Benjamin West, the father of American painting, showed his talent for art when he was only six years old. But he did not know about brushes before a visitor told him he needed one. In those days, a brush was made from camels hair. There were no camels nearby. Benjamin decided that cat hair would work instead. He cut some fur from the family cat to make a brush.
The brush did not last long. Soon Benjamin needed more fur. Before long, the cat began to look ragged (蓬亂). Benjamin was forced to admit what he had been doing.
The cats lot was about to improve. That year, one of Benjamins cousins, Mr. Pennington, came to visit. He was impressed with Benjamins drawings. When he went home, he sent Benjamin a box of paint and some brushes and six engravings (版畫) by an artist. These were the first pictures and first real paint and brushes Benjamin had ever seen. In 1747, when Benjamin was nine years old, Mr. Pennington returned for another visit. He was amazed at what Benjamin had done with his gift. He asked Benjamins parents if he might take the boy to Philadelphia for a visit.
In the city, Mr. Pennington gave Benjamin materials for creating oil paintings. The boy began a landscape (風(fēng)景) painting. Williams, a well-known painter, came to see him work. Williams was impressed with Benjamin and gave him two classic books on painting to take home. The books were long and dull. Benjamin could read only a little, having been a poor student. But he later said, “Those two books were my companions by day, and under my pillow at night.” While it is likely that he understood very little of the books, they were his introduction to classical paintings. The nine-year-old boy decided then that he would be an artist.
(? ? )26. The text is mainly about _______.
A. Benjamins visit to Philadelphia
B. Williams influence on Benjamin
C. the beginning of Benjamins life as an artist
(? ? )27. Benjamins first brush was made from _______.
A. cats hair B. camels hair

A. the cat would be closely watched

B. provided him with painting materials
C. sent him to a school in Philadelphia

Complain (抱怨) Politely
Not everything goes the way you want it to. You may go to a restaurant and order a nice meal. But your order is wrong or not cooked properly. You may buy a product that breaks the next day.
31. ________ However, if you speak angrily to people, they will become defensive (自衛(wèi)的). Then they are less likely to help you. A more effective (有效的) way to get what you want is to stay calm.
Use polite language and a friendly tone of voice. Start with phrases such as, “Im sorry to bother you, but...” or “Excuse me, but could you...?” For example, “Im sorry to bother you, but I ordered potato soup, not vegetable.” Phrasing your complaint as a question also helps. 32. ________ “Could you help me? I just bought this phone case yesterday, but its cracked.”
33. ________ There is no faster way to make someone defensive than by blaming them. Use the phrase. “I know this isnt your fault, but...” or “There has been a misunderstanding.” These phrases let people know you are only angry at the situation. Blaming people isnt as important as getting a problem fixed!
34. ________ In that case, dont say “Hey! Youre trying to cheat me!” Instead, use the phrase, “I understood that...” For example, “I understood that the service charge was included in the price.” Then give the person a chance to answer.
If you dont get what you want with polite conversation with a manager or supervisor. 35. ________

Four ways to have a good school life
Your schooldays should be some of the best and happiest days of your life. How can you get the most from them, and be sure you do not waste this great chance to learn?
Be active (積極的) at school. Dont say things are difficult or boring. Take interest in school life and your school subjects. Join lots of activities. Put up your hands quickly in class. Go around the school with a big smile. If you are not working, you are wasting your time at school. Teachers cannot make everything enjoyable (令人愉快的).
Keep fit. If you dont eat a good breakfast, you will be thinking about food in class. If you go to bed late and dont have enough sleep, you will be sleepy in class. Play enough sports every day in order to keep your body strong.
Face the problem. Do not say you will do things tomorrow. If you get behind the class, it is very difficult to get back in front. You cannot finish the race if you rest all the time. Everyone fails some exams, loses some matches and has bad days. Dont make small problems very big and important. Dont forget to ask for help. You are young, and no one thinks you must do everything quite well!
Spend the weekends. Dont waste time lying in bed on Saturday or Sunday morning. Go and play sports, get together with friends in the park to relax, learn to play the piano, or help someone with problem. If you dont want to go out, there are also a lot of things to do. You may read a book, practise English or help Mum with housework.
Follow our advice, and have a happy school life!

Vincent Willem Van Gogh (30 March, 1853—29 July, 1890) was a Dutch Post Impressionist artist. He is considered one of the greatest artists with great influence on the 20th century art.
Van Gogh spent his early adult life working for a company of art dealers (藝術(shù)商). After a brief period as a teacher, he became a missionary(傳教士). He did not begin his career as an artist until 1880; however, during the last ten years of his life, he produced more than 2,000 pieces, including around 900 paintings and 1,100 drawings and sketches (素描). He worked only with somber colors until he met Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism in Paris. Van Gogh used the bright colors and style of painting in a uniquely recognizable style. Most of his best known works were produced during his final two years, when he was suffering from serious mental illness.
In 1890, Van Gogh shot himself in the chest when he was 37. He died two days later. Theo, his brother and his best friend, at his side reported his last words as“The sadness will last forever.” It would not take long before his fame grew higher and higher.
Van Goghs mother threw away quite a number of his paintings. The only painting he sold during his lifetime, The Red Vineyard, was created in 1888. It is now on display in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, Russia. Several paintings by Van Gogh rank among the most expensive paintings in the world. On March 30, 1987, Van Goghs painting Irises was sold for a record of $53.9 million at Southbys, New York. On May 15, 1990 his Portrait of Doctor Gachet was sold for $83.5 million at Christies, thus setting a new price record.
46. When did Van Gogh begin his career as an artist?
47. What were the last words of Van Gogh before he died?
48. Did he sell many paintings during his lifetime?
49. Where is The Red Vineyard now?
