One morning, Anns neighbor Tracy found a lost dog wandering around the local elementary school. She asked Ann if she could keep an eye on the dog. Ann said that she could watch it only for the day.

Tracy took photos of the dog and printed off 400 FOUND fliers (傳單), and put them in mailboxes. Meanwhile, Ann went to the dollar store and bought some pet supplies, warning her two sons not to fall in love with the dog. At the time, Anns son Thomas was 10 years old, and Jack, who was recovering from a heart operation, was 21 years old.

Four days later Ann was still looking after the dog, whom they had started to call Riley. When she arrived home from work, the dog threw itself against the screen door and barked madly at her. As soon as she opened the door, Riley dashed into the boys room where Ann found Jack suffering a heart attack. Riley ran over to Jack, but as soon as Ann bent over to help him the dog went silent.

“If it hadnt come to get me, the doctor said Jack would have died,” Ann reported to a local newspaper. At this point, no one had called to claim the dog, so Ann decided to keep it.

The next morning Tracy got a call. A man named Peter recognized his lost dog and called the number on the flier. Tracy started crying, and told him, “That dog saved my friends son.”

Peter drove to Anns house to pick up his dog, and saw Thomas and Jack crying in the window. After a few moments Peter said, “Maybe Odie was supposed to find you. Maybe you should keep it.”

There are two kinds of memory—short-term and long-term. Information in long-term memory can be recalled at a later time when it is needed. The information may be kept for days or weeks, while information in short-term memory is kept for only a few seconds, usually by repeating the information over and over. The following experiment shows how short-term memory has been studied.

Henning studied how students who are learning English as a second language remember a list of words. The subjects in his experiment were 75 college students. They represented all levels of ability in English: beginning, intermediate (中級的), advanced, and native-speaking students.

To begin with, the subjects listened to a recording of a native speaker reading a paragraph in English. Following the recording, the subjects took a 15-question test to see which words they remembered. Each question had four choices. The subjects had to circle the word they had heard in the recording. Some of the questions had four choices that sound alike. For example, weather, whether, wither and wetter are four words that sound alike. Some of the questions had four choices that have the same meaning. Method, way, manner and system would be four words with the same meaning. Finally the subjects took a language proficiency test.

Henning found that students with a lower proficiency in English made more of their mistakes on words that sound alike; students with a higher proficiency made more of their mistakes on words that have the same meaning. Hennings results suggest that beginning students hold the sound of words in their short-term memory, and advanced students hold the meaning of words in their short-term memory.

    8. What did Henning want to find out through the experiment?

    A. How to develop students ability to use English.

    B. How students learn English as a second language.

    C. How long information in short-term memory is kept.

    D. How English words are remembered by non-native speakers.

    9. What does the underlined word “proficiency” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A. Skill. B. Degree.

    C. Attention. D. Knowledge.

    10. Who is more likely to keep the sound of words for only a

    short while?

    A. A beginner. B. An intermediate student.

    C. An advanced student. D. A native speaker.

    11. What is the text mainly about?

    A. English learning. B. Language tests.

    C. Short-term memory. D. Long-term memory.

Before a new type of airplane goes into service, every part of it is tested again and again. But there are two tests that are more important than all the others.

The first is called the “tank test”. A modern airplane must fly very high in the sky. Air must be pumped (用泵輸送) into the plane so that the passengers can breathe. The metal structure of the plane has to be very strong for this reason. When the plane is filled with air, the air presses against the skin of the plane inside. The pressure on a small window is like a huge foot that is trying to get out. If a small part of the plane were to fail, the plane would explode in the sky. To test the structure of the plane, the plane is lowered into a huge tank or container of water. Then it is filled with air. The pressure inside the plane is greater than it ever will be when it is high up in the air. Finally, there is an explosion. This does not cause so much damage inside the water tank as it would anywhere else. Engineers can discover which part of the plane has broken. Then that part is made stronger.

The most dangerous test happens when the new plane is going through test flights in the air. The test pilot must find out exactly what happens when the engines are all shut off at once. The plane begins to fall like a stone. It is the pilots job to find out how he can get control of the plane again. These two tests are examples of how planes are made safe before they ever carry passengers.

    12. By doing the “tank test”, the engineers can find out ___ .

    A. the amount of air in the plane

    B. the power of the airplane engines

    C. the strength of the plane structure

    D. the pressure inside and outside the plane

    13. During the “tank test” the plane will ___ .

    A. break B. become stronger

    C. be tested by pilots D. be filled with water

    14. Why are test flights thought to be most dangerous?

    A. The engines may be damaged.

    B. The plane may explode in the air.

    C. Too much air may get into the plane.

    D. The pilot may lose control of the plane.

    15. What can be the best title for the text?

    A. The Importance of Flying Safely

    B. The Danger of Testing Airplanes

    C. Two Important Tests on Airplanes

    D. How Airplanes Are Made and Tested

Running may be good exercise, but it can be difficult on the body. Here are five commonly shared ideas among fitness experts to reduce the risk of injury for people new to running.

    Take it easy.

1? ? ? ? Most people get running injuries when they push themselves too hard. The body needs time to get used to increases in distance or speed. Muscles and joints (關(guān)節(jié)) need time to recover.

    Listen to your body.

Most running injuries do not come out of the blue.? ? ? ? 2

They include body aches, sore muscles and pain that does not go away.

    Get good running shoes.

There is no single best shoe for every runner. You should find the shoe that offers the best fit and support for your feet. More importantly, you should replace your shoes every 500 to 800 kilometers.? ? ? ? 3

    Take good notes.

Take some time after each run to write down notes about what you did and how you felt. Look for patterns or things that happen over and over again. For example, you may find that your knees ache when you run on continuous days. But perhaps you feel great when you rest in between running days.? ? ? ? 4

    Cross train.

5? ? ? ? So physical fitness experts suggest some form of cross training to improve muscle balance and to help you stay injury free. They say swimming, cycling, and yoga are good workouts (鍛煉) to combine with running.

    A. Have a good rest after running.

    B. Usually, there are warning signs.

    C. Running also may help you live better.

    D. Do not run too much, too soon or too fast.

    E. As we said earlier, running is hard on your body.

    F. That will protect your feet from running injuries.

    G. These notes will help you identify the best workout for you.

    1.? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 2.? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 3.? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 4.? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 5.

For some minutes, all was quiet in the street. Then, from across the street, someone came walking at a slow pace.

It looked like a man of middle height, dressed in a big raincoat, a soft hat and rubber boots, and making little sound while walking. No one was in sight. It was a street with two rows of about fifty small houses, and there were three lamps on either side. The lamp nearest the childs house could be seen clearly, but the others were almost hidden by the smoky air. A car passed the end of the street and its lights showed faintly, but clearly enough for the wrinkled skin of a womans small face. The car disappeared as the woman, wrapped up in her coat, reached the doorway of the childs house.

She put a key into the lock quickly, pushed the door open and stepped inside, and then closed the door without looking round. She began to breathe hard.

She leaned against the door for a moment, then straightened up as if with an effort, and walked towards the door of the front room, the passage leading to the kitchen, and the narrow staircase. She hesitated outside the door, and then went up the stairs. There was enough light from the narrow hall to show the four doors leading off a small landing. She pushed each door open in turn and shone a torch inside, and the light fell upon beds, walls, furniture, a bathroom basin, and a mirror which flashed brightness back; but this was not what the woman was looking for. She turned away, went downstairs, and then turned towards the kitchen. Clearly there was nothing there, or in the small washroom, that she wanted. Two rooms remained—the front room and a smaller one next to it. She opened the front room door. After a moment, she saw the childs bed and the child.

    4. Which words can best describe the woman?

    A. Old and small. B. Middle-aged and healthy.

    C. Young and powerful. D. Weak and helpless.

    5. When she got into the house, the woman ___ .

    C. A child. D. A room.

Children of all ages gathered in New York City recently for the International Toy fair. There were new, high-tech educational products. Toymakers are working to create these products for improving a childs emotional intelligence.

PleIQ is a set of plastic toy blocks. It uses visual (視覺的) reality technology to teach words, numbers and other things. Edison Durán directs the company that makes PleIQ. She showed people at the toy fair how virtual (虛擬的) images appear on the blocks when they are held in front of a camera. PleIQ has children act as teacher or guide to a companion character.

Karen Hu from another company showed an educational robot called Woobo. The robot comes programmed with educational games and activities. Children use its touch screen face to get them started. Hu described how the robot can help a child who has autism (自閉癥). “The child can communicate with Woobo and follow some of the instructions Woobo is giving because he thinks of this as a companion instead of a parent or someone else telling him about certain things.”

At the EQtainment stand, sales director Jonathan Erickson explained the companys toys. “The purpose of all of our products is to develop emotional and social intelligence,” he said. Erickson showed off a board game called “Qs Race to the Top”. He said the game got his 4-year-old daughter to open up. “The biggest thing is her talking. And thats the key of all this—getting her feelings expressed out. Like, ‘Hey, what does it feel like to be sad? Or how does it feel like to be happy?”

It remains to be seen whether a game or toy can improve emotional intelligence. But toymakers are doing what they can to help parents in their efforts to raise well-rounded children.

    8. How does PleIQ instruct children to learn?

    A. By giving direct guidance.

    B. By presenting visual images.

    C. By taking photos with a camera.

    D. By playing the role of a companion.

    9. What can be inferred about Woobo from Paragraph 3?

    A. It may be good company for kids.

    B. It is programmed to be a teacher.

    C. It is aimed to design games.

    D. It can get started by itself.

    10. What does Jonathan Erickson think of his toys?

    A. They are quite easy to operate.

    B. They can teach children numbers.

    C. They can show their emotions clearly.

    D. They help kids express themselves well.

    11. What is the main idea of the text?

    A. Toys help to build emotional intelligence.

    B. Educational toys sell well in the Toy Fair.

    C. Children celebrate the International Toy Fair.

    D. Toymakers are making money from educational products.

Think about the last time you felt afraid. Was it a fear of height? Did you oversleep on a weekday and fear youd get into trouble at the office? In any case, you know what it feels like to feel fear.

But one woman doesnt. The woman, code-named “UM”, gave her first-ever interview after years of being studied by a team of researchers. The woman is given a code name because the researchers want to protect her from anyone who would take advantage of her inability to feel afraid.

UM cant tell you what fear is because shes never experienced it. “I wonder what its like to actually be afraid of something,” she said. The formal name for the disease is Urbach-Wiethe disease, which is characterized by a hoarse (粗啞的) voice, small bumps around the eyes, and calcium deposits in the brain.

In the case of UM, the disease has transformed the part of her brain that controls the human response to fear. In the interview, UM talks about an event in her life where she was held at knifepoint and gunpoint, “I was walking to the store, and I saw a man on a park bench. He said, ‘Come here, please. So I went over to him. He grabbed me by the shirt, put a knife to my throat and told me he was going to cut me. I told him, ‘Go ahead and cut me. I wasnt afraid at all. And for some reason, he let me go.”

Doctors who have been studying UMs condition for years have been trying different things that could strike fear into her. They finally figured something out—increasing UMs carbon dioxide levels. Extra carbon dioxide concentration in the blood is known to cause fear and panic in health individuals. Increasing UMs carbon dioxide levels did manage to give her a fright.

    12. Why does the writer ask the questions in Paragraph 1?

    A. To start a discussion. B. To tell what fear is.

    C. To introduce the topic. D. To talk about an idea.

    13. Why is the woman with Urbach-Wiethe disease given a

    code name?

    A. To ensure her safety.

    B. To respect her privacy.

    C. To meet the researchers demands.

    D. To tell her case from other patients.

    14. From UMs case, we can know that Urbach-Wiethe disease

    may ___ .

    A. lead to an increase in carbon dioxide

    B. lead to a decrease in calcium deposits

    C. stop the brain from responding quickly

    D. stop the brain from functioning normally

    15. What will probably happen to UM?

    A. Getting the sense of panic.

    B. Experiencing another danger.

    C. Speaking with a hoarse voice.

    D. Dying of the Urbach-Wiethe disease.

When very small dinosaur bones were found in a German mine, people thought they were from baby dinosaurs.1Martin Sanders work shows that they were probably fully grown and belong to the smallest giant dinosaur species ever2(find).

Growth marks on dinosaur bones are similar3growth rings on trees. The rings are far apart while the animal is young and growing quickly. They get closer as growth slows. “It is4(exact) these tight ring marks that we found in the fossil bones,” says Sander. So the fossils must have been from adult5(animal).

Why was this German dinosaur so much6(small) than other giant dinosaurs, which grew up to 45 metres long and7(weigh) as much as a thousand humans?

150 million years ago, most of Germany was underwater. Scientists think that as water levels rose, there was less and less land and food available. The dinosaur8(force) to adapt and evolved into a smaller animal9(need) less space and food.

Since 1998, scientists have dug up more than 1,000 dinosaur fossils in the mine. It is one of the few places in the world10the bones and footprints of dinosaurs have been found together.

In the second class in this morning, our physics teacher analyzed the hard problem for us and then gave us the key to it. While the key seemed a little unreasonably, no one but I doubted it. Think his key was controversial, I devoted me to the problem heart and soul, trying to figure it out in a different way. Twenty minutes late, I succeeded in finding, in my opinions, the right key. While I explained him my thought, he praised me and said I was right. Through this matter I had learnt that questioning is very important on the road to the truth.

Short and shy, Ben Saunders was the last kid in his class picked for any sports team. “Football, tennis—anything with a round ball, I was useless,” he says now with a laugh. But back then he was the object of jokes in school gym classes in Englands rural Devonshire.

It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him. At first the teen went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to cycle along with a runner friend. Gradually, Saunders set his mind building up his body and increasing his speed, strength and endurance (忍耐力). At the age of 18, he ran his first marathon.

The following year, he met John Ridgway, who became famous in the 1960s for rowing an open boat across the Atlantic Ocean. Saunders was hired as an instructor at Ridgways School of Adventure in Scotland, where he learned about the older mans cold-water exploits. Intrigued, Saunders read all he could about Arctic explorers and North Pole expeditions (遠(yuǎn)征), and then decided that this would be his future.

Journeys to the Pole arent the usual holidays for this British country boy, and many people considered his dream as fantasy. “John Ridgway was one of the few who didnt say, ‘You are completely crazy, ” Saunders said.

In 2001, after becoming a skilled skier, Saunders started his first long-distance expedition toward the North Pole. He suffered from frostbite (凍傷), had a closer encounter with a polar bear and pushed his body to the limit.

Saunders has since then become the youngest person to ski alone to the North Pole, and hes skied more of the Arctic by himself than any other British. His old playmates would not believe his change.

This October, Saunders, 27, heads south to explore from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back, an 1800-mile journey that has never been completed on skis.

We are naturally drawn to friends and colleagues with familiar voices. Scientists have found people prefer those who have a similar accent, intonation and tone of voice to themselves.

Previous research has focused on how male or female a voice sounds. Men with deeper voices and women with slightly higher voices were thought to sound more attractive, because they suggest a bigger or a smaller body.

But the new study, published by a linguistics expert in Canada, suggests there is a more complex mechanism (機制) at play. Dr Molly Babel, from the University of British Columbia in Canada, said, “The voice is an amazingly flexible tool that we use to construct our identity. Very few things in our voices are changeless, so we felt that our preferences had to be about more than a persons shape and size.”

She recorded 30 volunteers voices and asked each to rate the others attractiveness on a range from one to nine. Each participant was from western America, with similar accents. The people were all in the same dialect group, but they showed that dialect to different degrees.

“We seem to like people who sound like we sound; we like people who fit within what we know,” Dr Babel said. She also found that breathy voices in women—typified by the famous American actress Marilyn Monroe—were seen as more attractive.

The breathy tone, caused by younger and thinner vocal cords (聲帶), implied youthfulness and health. A creaky (咯吱作響的) voice, suggesting a person has a cold, is tired or smokes, was seen as unattractive. The participants preferred men who spoke with a shorter average word length and deeper voices.

    12. In terms of voice preferences, the new findings stress ___ .

    A. body size and shape B. shorter word length

    C. thicker vocal cords D. the same social groups

    13. Why did Dr Molly Babel mention Marilyn Monroe?

Bandhavgarh National Park in India is best known for its amazing setting, as well as having the highest concentration of tigers in India. In addition to tigers, there are also bears, deer, wolves, birds, etc.

Opening Hours and Safari (打獵) Times

Safaris operate twice a day, starting at dawn until late morning, and mid-afternoon until sunset. The best time to visit the park is early in the morning or after 4 pm to spot the animals. The park is closed from July 1 to September 30 due to the monsoon season (季風(fēng)季節(jié)).

    Bandhavgarh Zone

Bandhavgarh is divided into three main zones: Tala (the parks best zone, with the most tigers), Magdhi (the second best zone to see tigers), and Khitauli (scenic and less visited, although tiger sighting do occur there; particularly good for birding).

Argentina in the late nineteenth century was an exciting place. Around 1870, it was experiencing an economic boom (繁榮), and the capital, Buenos Aires, attracted many people. Farmers, as well as a flood of foreigners from Spain and Italy, came to Buenos Aires seeking jobs. These jobs didnt pay well, and the people felt lonely and disappointed with their new life in the city. As the unhappy newcomers mixed together in the poor parts of the city, the dance known as the tango (探戈舞) came into being.

At the beginning the tango was a dance of the lower classes. It was danced in the bars and streets. At that time there were many fewer women than men, so if a man didnt want to be left out, his only choice was to dance with another man so that he could attract the attention of the few available women. Gradually, the dance spread into the upper classes of Argentinean society and became more respectable.

In Europe at this time, strong interest in dance from around the world was beginning. This interest in international dance was especially evident in Paris. Every kind of dance from ballet to belly dancing could be found on the stages of the Paris theaters. After tango dancers from Argentina arrived in Europe, they began to draw the interest of the public as they performed their exciting dance in cafes. Though not everyone approved of the new dance, saying it was a little too shocking, the dance did find enough supporters to make it popular.

The popularity of the tango continued to grow in many other parts of the world. Soldiers who returned to the United States from World War I brought the tango to North America. It reached Japan in 1926, and in 2003 the Argentinean embassy in Seoul hired a local tango dancer to act as a kind of dance ambassador, and promote tango dancing throughout South Korea.

We all wish we had just a bit more time. Just think what you could do with an extra hour or two each day: you could finally stick to an exercise routine, write your novel, or learn the guitar and so on.

But I can help you find more hours in your day for the things that really matter.

◆ Get out of bed earlier.

If you normally get up at 7:30 am, try getting up at 7:00 am. That half-hour might not sound like much, but it could be time that you use to exercise, to read that book youve been meaning to finish.

◆ Do the important tasks first.

Once you get to work, get the important ones done first. You can afford to spend at least an hour working on big, important tasks rather than on all those little urgent ones.? The urgent tasks will still get done, and you wont miss the important ones.

    ◆ Reduce interruptions.

Constant interruptions dont just eat up time; they also break your concentration. When youve got a big task to focus on, let your calls go to voicemail.? Wearing headphones makes it less likely that people will try to strike up a conversation.

When youre working, work. If your concentration is slipping, take a proper break. And if youre facing a difficult task, try breaking it into small steps or stages so that its easier to deal with.

    A. Stay focused on your work.

    B. Take breaks when necessary.

    C. You want to make your day longer.

    D. If you have an office door, close it.

    E. If you work like this, youll usually save time.

    F. I cant magically make all your days 25 hours long.

    G. Or simply use it to get your day off to a calm and

    organized start.
