As I went through school, I came to understand that life was about competition. The only thing that mattered was doing better than everyone else. I watched this cycle through the lives of my four older brothers. I watched them win awards time and time again and admired by teachers and adults alike. And I wanted all of that. But then I learned that I couldnt compete with my brothers or with others for that matter. I didnt enjoy maths and science nearly as much as I enjoyed English literature. My stomach would often hurt thinking about the amount of time Id have to put in studying and working to get ahead of everyone. Around the seventh grade, I decided that I didnt care about being a top student any more. I just wanted to do what brought me joy. I wanted to just read and write for days.

Then I watched my older brothers enter the workplace and not enjoy the career path they had chosen. That made my stomach hurt, too. At the same time, they were making a lot of money and were able to afford expensive cars and go on trips that seemed enjoyable, but I decided that Id not trade the cars and trips for having a job that brought me joy.

So I did just that. I majored in English in college with a concentration on creative fictions. For the past decade, Ive had a career in a non-profit organization serving children in need. It has brought me great joy. Theres not a daily drive to compete in the market place and be better than another organization so that we increase our profits. The drive is to serve another person with excellence. And the other unexpected aspects are that while I have never made a lot of money, I have a car and have been fortunate to take some pretty amazing trips for work.

    B. He wanted to follow his heart.

    D. He often had stomachaches.

    26. What can we learn about the writer?

    A. He makes great contributions to society.

    B. He is less successful than his brothers.

    C. He finds great pleasure in his work.

    D. He doesnt travel anywhere.

    27. What may the writer agree?

    A. We should be devoted to helping others.

    B. We should try to do better than others.

    C. We should not compete with others.

    D. We should do what we really like.

    C

Many people think of Philadelphia as the place where the Liberty Bell, a symbol of Americas independence, is located. But there is another side to the city—its murals (壁畫). In neighborhoods throughout the city, you will find more than 4,000 murals painted on the sides of buildings.

The murals are of different sizes, shapes and colors. Some murals are painted directly onto the buildings. Others are painted on paper and then fitted onto the wall like a puzzle.

The Mural Arts Program began in 1984 as part of Philadelphias Anti-Graffiti Network. Today, lots of artists are painting murals with the help of community members. The program welcomes everyone to paint and is now working with more than 25,000 local people of all ages and backgrounds. A mural called “Finding Home”, for example, was created by homeless people.

Artist Meg Saligman, who has painted many murals around the city, says that she is honored to take part in the program and that she hopes it can bring changes.

“Spending a couple of hours painting with others is a great experience,” says Deborah OBrien, a Philadelphia volunteer. The murals, she adds, represent the diversity and sense of community.

Murals can last anywhere from 5 to 25 years. When a mural starts to fade (褪色), the program tries to save it. “People are sad and angry when you take a mural away because people really love them,” says Saligman.

Mural subjects range from sports to politics to history. That means everyone can have a favourite. If youre planning to visit Philadelphia, be sure to check out the colorful murals.

    28. What do we know about murals?

    A. They are made in bright colors.

    B. They include all kinds of puzzles.

    B. everyones participation in murals.

    C. someones dream of having a home.

    D. the history of the Mural Arts Program

    30. What can we learn about the Mural Arts Program?

    A. It needs a number of volunteers.

    B. It brings changes for every artist.

    C. It works on saving fading murals.

    D. It appeals to people to love murals.

    31. What is the authors purpose in writing the text?

    A. To explore the future of the murals.

    B. To introduce murals in Philadelphia.

    C. To encourage the public to focus on murals.

    D. To tell us how Philadelphia became independent.

    D

Most people only tap (發(fā)掘) a small part of their potential. You do what you CAN do, but are you doing what you COULD do? Most people do what they CAN do, but not what they COULD do. But there is a whole other world of possibilities out there that most of us dont even let ourselves think about them.

The larger question we need to ask ourselves is: Can we reach a greater potential than we have ever imagined? In fact, if you stop and think about it, what could you do? I mean if you werent afraid of failing, or if you decided to stop coming up with reasons for not doing something, what COULD you actually accomplish?

As a psychotherapist (心理咨詢師) I was always interested in the stories that people told about themselves.

Joey Boring, a stockbroker who worked in Edward Jones, was an average performer until he got a vision of what he COULD do. Within two years Joey became one of the top performers. In fact, during the global financial crisis, his performance was up by 43%. Why? Joey decided not to limit himself. He said, “I realized that I could do more than I had ever thought I could do”, and he did! During a time that could have easily been the worst financial period in his career, he chose to view it as an opportunity and began to focus his efforts on ways to better serve his existing customers.

A young friend of mine, Ashtyn Van, sprained (扭) her knee pretty badly. As a 14-year-old girl, she decided that she could tell herself that she was strong enough and good enough to do it. That day, she received the highest score at the state level competition. She could do more than she was doing.

I wonder what limits you are putting on yourself today. Perhaps we are only held back by our own limited thinking.

    32. According to the author, the things that could be done are those that you _____.

    A. arent sure but may succeed

    B. are successful in doing

    C. have the ability to do

    D. have managed to do

    33. Why cant many people realize a greater potential?

    A. They havent drawn lessons from past failures.

    B. They are not good enough to succeed.

    C. They tend to find themselves excuses.

    D. They are realistic.

    34. Why does the author tell about Joey and Ashtyn in Paragraph 4 and 5?

    A. To praise them.

    B. To say they are really lucky dogs.

    C. To tell people everyone can succeed by working hard.

    D. To prove ones potential is far bigger than he or she can imagine.

    35. Which would be the best title for the text?

    A. God Helps Those Who Help Themselves

    B. Stop Putting Limits on Yourself

    C. Are You Going to Take a Risk?

    D. Are You Brave Enough?
