The Chinese have made a millennia-old study of health and wellness. But never, perhaps, have these issues been as pertinent as today, when a fractured healthcare system and lethal levels of stress drive urbanites to seek alternative paths to wellbeing. Fans of the medical practices of Chinas ethnic minorities and traditional “herbal diets” are seeking official recognition for these increasingly popular avenues of care, while millennials have invented their own ad hoc health regimes—mixtures of ancient health tips and modern indulgences, allowing them to have their spicy hot pot and eat it too. The means of achieving good health may have changed radically since the last generation, but the desire to live well definitely remains.
