When I told my father I was moving to Des Moines， Iowa， he told me about the only time he had been there. It was in the 1930s when he was an editor of the literary magazine of Southern Methodist University （SMU） in Dallas， Texas. He also worked as a professor at SMU， and there was a girl student in his class who suffered from a serious back disease. She couldnt afford the operation because her family was poor.

Her mother ran a boardinghouse in Galveston， a seaside town near Houston， Texas. She was cleaning out the attic （閣樓） one day when she came across an old dusty manuscript （手稿）. On its top page were the words， “By O. Henry.” It was a nice story， and she sent it to her daughter at SMU， who showed it to my father. My father had never read the story before， but it sounded like O. Henry， and he knew that O. Henry had once lived in Houston. So it was possible that the famous author had gone to the beach and stayed in the Galveston boardinghouse， and had written the story there and left the manuscript behind by accident. My father visited an O. Henry expert at Columbia University in New York， who authenticated the story as O. Henrys.

My father then set out to sell it. Eventually， he found himself in Des Moines， meeting with Gardner Cowles， a top editor at The Des Moines Register. Cowles loved the story and bought it on the spot. My father took the money to the girl. It was just enough for her to have the operation she so desperately needed.

My father never told me what the O. Henry story was about. But I doubt that it could have been better than his own story.

In 1947 a group of famous people from the art world headed by an Austrian conductor decided to hold an international festival of music， dance and theatre in Edinburgh. The idea was to reunite Europe after the Second World War.

It quickly attracted famous names such as Alec Guinness， Richard Button， Dame Margot Fonteyn and Marlene Dietrich as well as the big symphony orchestras （交響樂團(tuán)）. It became a fixed event every August and now attracts 400，000 people yearly.

At the same time， the “Fringe” appeared as a challenge to the official festival. Eight theatre groups turned up uninvited in 1947， in the belief that everyone should have the right to perform， and they did so in a public house disused for years.

Soon， groups of students firstly from Edinburgh University， and later from the universities of Oxford and Cambridge， Durham and Birmingham were making the journey to the Scottish capital each summer to perform theatre by little-known writers of plays in small church halls to the people of Edinburgh.

Today the “Fringe”， once less recognized， has far outgrown the festival with around 1，500 performances of theatre， music and dance on every one of the 21 days it lasts. And yet as early as 1959， with only 19 theatre groups performing， some said it was getting too big.

A paid administrator was first employed only in 1971， and today there are eight administrators working all year round and the number rises to 150 during August itself. In 2004 there were 200 places housing 1，695 shows by over 600 different groups from 50 different countries. More than 1.25 million tickets were sold.

Harvard researchers have created a tough， low-cost， biodegradable （可生物降解的） material inspired by insects hard outer shells. The materials inventors say it has a number of possible uses and someday could provide a more environmentally friendly alternative to plastic. The material， made from shrimp shells and proteins produced from silk， is called “shrilk”. It is thin， clear， flexible and strong.

A major benefit of the material is its biodegradability. Plastics toughness and flexibility （彈性） represented a revolution in materials science during the 1950s and 1960s. Decades later， however， plastics very durability （耐用性） is raising questions about how appropriate it is for one-time products such as plastic bags， or short-lived consumer goods， used in the home for a few years and then cast into a landfill where they will degrade for centuries. What is the point of making something that lasts 1，000 years？

Shrilk has great possibilities， the inventors said. Materials from which it is made are plentiful in nature， found in everything ranging from shrimp shells， insect bodies to living plants. That makes shrilk low cost， and its mass production possible should it be used for products demanding a lot of materials.

Work on shrilk is continuing in the lab. The inventors said the material becomes flexible when wet， so theyre exploring ways to use it in wet environments. Theyre also developing simpler production processes， which could be used for non-medical products， like for computer cases and other products inside the home. Theyre even exploring combining it with other materials like carbon fibers， to give it new properties （特性）.

When the sand began kicking up and hitting our faces， I started to worry that maybe we had made a mistake.

That afternoon， my dad had stood on the deck （露臺） of our home and laughed as our neighbors packed up their cars and headed inland. They left to spend the night in motels or at friends homes that were out of range of approaching summer storm.

The annual Carnival in Brazil is a unique festival. It is also the most important ethnic （民族的） celebration. It comes between the end of February and the beginning of March every year. TerraCycles 85 employees make nearly 200 products， sold at shops such as Petco， Kmart， Whole Foods Market， and Target.

Szakys $7.4 million company， now also moving ahead in Mexico， Canada， the United Kingdom and Brazil， is quite different from the business he founded with his classmate Jon Beyer in 2002 as a freshman at Princeton University. Many of the worlds tallest buildings will make you dizzy if you reach their top. But these grand buildings could soon look like bungalows in comparison to a three-mile-high skyscraper which it is said could be built by 2062.

The skyscraper is the idea of Arconic， a materials science company based in New York， as part of its larger campaign called “The Jetsons”—which shows respect to the 1962 cartoon. Arconic has imagined the skyscraper created using materials that are either in development or have already been brought to market， including smog-eating surfaces and retractable （可伸縮的） balconies.

Sherri McCleary， one of Arconics chief materials scientists， says one of the most exciting and immediate projects is EcoClean， a special coating that helps buildings self-clean and purify the surrounding air. It was first released in 2011 and offers a number of benefits over traditional glass windows.

EcoClean uses a mix of chemicals， which use both light and water vapor to produce atoms known as free radicals （自由基）. These free radicals draw in pollutants in the air， breaking them down before they fall off the side of the building.

Another creation is in the windows themselves， which Arconic also hopes could be a part of the three-mile-high tower. The new design is called Bloomframe. Essentially， its a motorized window that changes into an all-glass balcony in under a minute. The firm has already showcased the Bloomframe technology at several trade shows， and hopes it will become available to buy in the near future.

The firm is also working on flying cars， featuring ultra-lightweight car bodies and airplane wings. In the meantime， it continues working to push the limits of what modern-day skyscrapers can look like and do. Thanks to 3D printing， McCleary says many structures that arent currently feasible （可行的） could withstand high winds and unique climates.

Not everyone thinks laughter is the best medicine， but it seems to help. Scientists conducted a study on diabetes （糖尿?。?patients to test this idea.

Researchers divided 20 high-risk diabetes patients into two groups. Both groups were given standard diabetes medicine. The laughter group （Group L） viewed 30 minutes of humor of their choosing， while the control group （Group C） did not. This went on for a year.

By two months into the study， the patients in Group L had a lower level of the hormone epinephrine （荷爾蒙腎上腺素）which is considered to be a measure of stress. After 12 months， HDL cholesterol had risen by 26 percent in Group L but only by 3 percent in Group C. In another measure， C-reactive proteins （蛋白質(zhì)）， a marker of heart disease， dropped by 66 percent in Group L but only by 26 percent in Group C.

“The doctors believe that there is a physical change brought about by positive emotions，” said study leader Lee Berk of Loma Linda University. Other research has also found that humor makes us more hopeful. “Still， more study is needed to determine what these results mean，” Berk said. The research by Berk found that humor can bring about changes in body chemistry. Researches at the University of Maryland School of Medicine showed that laughter causes the inner lining of blood vessels （血管） to expand， increasing blood flow in a way thought to be healthy.
