Travelers to a new city are often encouraged to take a bus tour. The thinking is that they can later return to the places that attracted them, but thats nonsense! What you see from the inside of a fastmoving bus is sanitized and unreal, entirely removed from the real sights, sounds, and smells outside.

The best way to experience any destination is by foot, without an itinerary, wandering where your spirit leads you. Even in the largest cities, the savvy traveler plunges into the very center of town and walks down the nearest street, experiencing the actual life of the people while looking into the grocery stores and courtyard. You eventually get to many of the same sites that are on the bus route—the museums, the monuments, the city hall—but you will have witnessed so much more because you will have felt the contemporary life of the city youre visiting.

“But what if I get lost?” people ask. No one ever gets permanently lost in a major city. Eventually, a trolley or bus passes with the words “Central Station” on its front and you can easily return to the center of town. Besides, the most wonderful things can happen if you do get lost, such as stopping at a sidewalk cafe to sit and relax and then asking directions from the locals at the next table. Hopefully, your trip may be attractive by this encounter. Here are a few ways to make the most of your travels:

Know before you go. Before you depart, spend time in a library or bookstore, learning about the history and culture of your destination so you will better understand the place youre visiting.

Move around like a local. Use the local subways, trams and buses. Youll not only save money, youll learn how people live there, and youll gain a realistic perspective of the city.

Check the bulletin board. Bulletin boards list free lectures, concerts, workshops and social gatherings, giving you a chance to join or meet the areas most dynamic residents.

Take a walking tour. If you must book a guided tour, select the nonstandard, inexpensive kinds conducted on foot.

So, the next time you feel lured by a sightseeing bus tour, save your money and instead, wander around on your own. I promise you a time youll remember fondly.

    38. What about travelling by bus according to the author?

    A. You can enjoy the beauty of the destination.

    B. It is faster than travelling on foot.

    C. You cant be exposed to the outside world.

    D. It is noisy because there are too many tourists.

    39. Why is traveling by foot one of the best choices to experience the city?

    A. Because you can buy anything you like.

    B. Because you can get to the same destination as the bus tour.

    C. Because you can experience the real life in person.

    D. Because you can go to museums and city halls where the bus doesnt get.

    40. Which of the following is the best title of this passage?

    A. Travelling on foot

    B. Making the most of your travel

    C. How to plan your travel

    D. How to travel with a budget

    C

Do you find it difficult to put down your mobile phone?

If yes, youre not alone. These days, many people suffer from the stress of FOMO (fear of missing out). They reach for their mobile phones when they wake up in the morning, and for the rest of the day, they constantly scroll down the timelines of their social media apps to get the latest updates.

Despite the convenience smartphones bring, many people struggle with their digital habits.

As Sameer Samat, US tech company vice president of product management, said in his speech at the 2018 Google I/O developer conference on May 8, 70% of people dont want to spend so much time on their phones.

This is why during the conference Google introduced an app called Dashboard for the new version of its Android operating system. This new app includes wellbeing functions that aim to help users manage the time they spend on their digital devices.

It all starts with a birdseye view. Dashboard allows users to look at all the details of their phone habits. For example, users can see how many times theyve unlocked their phone and how many times theyve checked their social media apps, as well as how much time they spend on each app every day.

Once the users see this information, theyll be able to make some changes. With the App Timer functions, users can set a time limit for how long they can use each app for every day. After theyve hit the limit, they wont be able to launch the app until the next day.

But even if users become more mindful of their usage, theyre still likely to be drawn in by notifications (通知). This is where the Shush feature comes in. It automatically silences incoming calls and notifications when a user puts his / her phone face down.

If people truly want to make full use of their free time instead of losing hours using their smartphones, these new functions are just one way of doing that.

After all, who needs to use an app to stop you from using other apps when the easiest answer would be just to use your willpower?

    41. People suffering from FOMO may.

    A. not be able to live without mobile phones

    B. find it hard to focus on anything

    C. be addicted to their mobile phones

    D. prefer to download the latest apps

    42. Why does Google launch Dashboard?

    A. Current Android system cant satisfy peoples needs.

    B. Peoples complaint about their smart phones.

    C. Samats impressive speech at a conference.

    D. To balance mobile phone users smartphone addiction.

    43. Dashboard is designed to.

    A. track peoples habits of using mobile phone

    B. judge whether the apps people are using are safe or not

    C. stop people from using mobile phones at nights

    D. protect mobile phone users from being disturbed

    44. What can be learned from the passage?

    A. Dashboard turned out to be popular.

    B. Dashboard is a perfect choice to manage time properly.

    C. Strong willpower is the easiest way to avoid smartphone addiction.

    D. People are exploring other ways to stop overusing smartphones.

The Boy Who Harnessed (利用) the Wind is an inspirational truestory film based on a memoir—an account of the authors personal experiences—by the Malawian engineer William Kamkwamba. As a teenager, Kamkwamba built a wind turbine for his faminestricken town in Malawi, helping to power small appliances and eventually irrigate crops. But though the film points toward that technological breakthrough, it spends much of its running time depicting (描繪) its heros community and avoids many of the damaging language that tend to accompany popcultural description of poverty or conflicts in African countries.

This approach is what makes the movie, much more attractive than other such docudramas. Chiwetel Ejiofor, an English actor, is making his feature appearance as a writer and director to draw attention to Kamkwambas story—but hes just as focused on depicting the boys family life and the dangers of farming in early2000s Malawi. Famine isnt just a thing that happens to the Kamkwambas. Its the result of a series of unpredictable catastrophes that trickle down to this small village and leave its people struggling to grow and sell food. By examining the many structural reasons for the towns crisis, Ejiofor makes Kamkwambas achievement feel betterearned from a narrative perspective.

The Kamkwambas are not lacking in food, at first, though they do live harvest to harvest. Soon, a series of dramatic floods, combined with government unrest (動蕩), begins to take a toll on (have a bad effect on) their life. Through it all, William shows his gift for invention, taking apart whatever machines he can get his hands on and figuring out how they work. In one crucial (and cleverly written) scene, some local teenagers beg William to fix their radio so that they can listen to a soccer game, and he does, making use of a battery from several drained power cells. As the radio jolts to life, it delivers a news report of planes hitting buildings in the U.S., which serves as the first real acknowledgment of the films exact time period. The uninterested teens immediately switch over to the game, but Ejiofor included that detail for a reason. Though Malawi is on the other side of the world from the U.S., and the Kamkwambas village is far from the countrys biggest city, the negative effects of 9/11 are felt even there—unsettling the government and setting off a chain reaction that quickly turns things terrible. Moments like these affirm Ejiofors particular skill for storytelling. To William and his young friends, the event barely registers, but it still has huge consequences for their lives.

The latter half of the film is tougher going than the light, communityoriented opening, but its anchored by strong performances. Trywell, Williams father, isnt a bad dad, but as his family gets hungrier, his anger toward his government, which was supposed to help him thrive, rises to the surface. As Williams mother, Maga is a calmer, steadier figure, but her pride is damaged, too. She speaks of never wanting to be the hidebound family “praying for rain,” as her ancestors did, and despairs as Trywells strategy to save the farm becomes almost exactly that.

At a certain point, I started mentally checking my watch—Isnt it time for the boy to start harnessing the wind? But Ejiofor doesnt want Williams massive achievement to look easy. Not only does William need to gather the practical materials needed for a windmill in a nearly abandoned town, but he also has to challenge his fathers skepticism and persuade him to give up the few possessions he still has, including a bicycle, to create something that appears impossible. Its striking, and deeply sad, to consider that superficially (表面上) the only thing keeping Williams town from starvation was basically wind power. In Ejiofors hands, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind builds realism and context into both sides of that story and manages to be a winning adaptation as a result.

    45. Whats the theme of the movie “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind”?

    A. the miserable life in Malawi

    B. the irrigation of the crops

    C. the building of the turbine

    D. the technology breakthrough

    46. How does Ejiofor represent Kamkwambas achievement?

    A. By shooting the film in the form of storytelling.

    B. By analyzing the reasons for the villages poverty.

    C. By listing unpredictable catastrophes attacking the village.

    D. By strengthening the difficulty in growing and selling the food.

    47. Why did Ejiofor describe Kamkwambas repairing the radio?

    A. To report the terror event in the US.

    B. To reveal the setting of the film.

    C. To stress the teens interest in games.

    D. To indicate he likes showing off.

    48. The underlined word “hidebound” means.

    A. typicalB. stereotyped

    C. representative D. classical

    49. What difficulties does Kamkwamba have to face when building a wind turbine.

    A. He has to collect practical materials needed from a rundown town.

    B. His father suspects the possibility of windmill saving the town.

    C. It is definitely impossible to gather enough components of windmill.

    D. Ejiofor wont make it easy for him to finish it easily.

    50. What would be the best title for this passage?

    A. A Wind Turbine Invented by a Malawian Engineer

    B. An Inspirational Truestory Adapted into a Film

    C. A poor small village suffering from famine

    D. A True Winner—The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind

A new technology is going to ripe, one that could transform our daily lives, help to form new industries, and even remove world economic powers from their present positions. Unlike the wave of industrialization that began in the West and spread later to the rest of the world, the new developments are taking place in research labs all over the globe—and Asians are in the forefront. Physicists are creating a new class of materials that display an amazing property unforeseen even two years ago—superconductivity (超導(dǎo)體技術(shù)).

Used today only in specialized equipment, super conductors have the potential to radically change most of the electrical and electronic appliances found in the home, making them smaller, more powerful and efficient. They could free our cities of pollution by replacing petrol and diesel (柴油) vehicles with electric cars, and cut the cost of electricity. The new materials do something that even the best of conductors such as copper and silver cannot—they do away with all electrical resistance. The significances for energy storage are great.

The technology is in its early stage, still accessible to countries that decide to invest brains and money. For 75 years it had remained little more than a scientific curiosity with limited practical use because the phenomenon occurred only at extremely low temperatures. It was first observed in 1911 by a Dutch scientist named Heike Kamerlingh Onnes, who cooled mercury (水銀) to temperatures below -269℃ with liquid helium (氦). Then in January last year, two IBM scientists, K. Alex Muller and J. George Bednorz, found a metal oxide ceramic (氧化陶瓷) that superconducted at -243℃. Their report went largely unnoticed until last December, when it was confirmed at a scientific meeting in Boston. Today Japan, India, China and other Asian countries all have their share of experts who spend their days and nights in labs, acting as midwives (助產(chǎn)士) to a new technology.

    五、書面表達(滿分25分)

    請閱讀下面短文,并按要求用英語寫一篇150詞左右的文章。

Social networks are a big part of nearly every teenagers life in this day and age. Many teens have QQ, WeChat, or Weibo but little do a lot of teens know that they can be held responsible for everything they post for the rest of their lives. Everything you post online is part of a digital footprint that can always be traced(追蹤)back to you. That includes every post, even like, comment, favorite and forward that you have ever committed. All pictures youve posted or will post have been stored in a digital database, and it is the companies right to keep all of these documents that you believe to have been deleted or hidden.

With every post comes a consequence; whether it is good or bad, what you post could be seen by anyone. That is why you have to be very careful of what you decide to post or comment.

If you think you are safe from Servite finding out about one funny comment you made six months ago on a meaningless picture, you are probably wrong. Recently, a senior, Aaron, at Servite learned this lesson the hard way this year. He wrote a series of ugly comments towards Connelly girls on a web page, ignoring potential consequences.

This student, however, did have to face consequences from Servite as he was removed from all of his leadership roles in the school. Surprisingly enough, he fully agreed with his punishment handed down by the administration and fully understood why he was given such severe discipline(懲處). “When you agree to come to Servite, you are agreeing to defend what Servite stands for,” the young man said. “That continues past the hours of 8 am and 2 pm. Its at all times.”

So, next time youre about to post something you think could be received as offensive or inappropriate, think twice, think again, and dont press send.

    五、One possible version:

Social networks play a crucial role in teenagers life in this day and age, leading to their posting everything on the Internet. Whatever their intentions are, they should think twice before posting.

Behind this phenomenon are various reasons. On the one hand, teenagers are so occupied with their daily routines that they have little time to communicate with their contemporaries, resulting in their posting everything on the Internet. On the other hand, as they grow older, they find it difficult for them to interact with their parents. This is why they turn to the Internet for help.

Measures should be taken to make full use of the Internet. For one thing, teenagers should be selfdisciplined when posting things on the Internet; For another thing, offensive or inappropriate behaviors should be punished so that teenagers could distinguish between right and wrong. Only when teachers and parents join forces will teenagers grow healthily. (151 words)
