When I told my father I was moving to Des Moines， Iowa， he told me about the only time he had been there. It was in the 1930s when he was an editor of the literary magazine of Southern Methodist University （SMU） in Dallas， Texas. He also worked as a professor at SMU， and there was a girl student in his class who suffered from a serious back disease. She couldnt afford the operation because her family was poor.

My father visited an O. Henry expert at Columbia University in New York， who authenticated the story as O. Henrys.

My father then set out to sell it. Eventually， he found himself in Des Moines， meeting with Gardner Cowles， a top editor at The Des Moines Register. Cowles loved the story and bought it on the spot. My father took the money to the girl. It was just enough for her to have the operation she so desperately needed.

My father never told me what the O. Henry story was about. But I doubt that it could have been better than his own story.

When the sand began kicking up and hitting our faces， I started to worry that maybe we had made a mistake.

But that wasnt the point； the point was you had to try while some middle-aged guy who couldnt make it up a flight of stairs shouted at you. We should have put our son on that rope， and given him a head start. But we didnt want to shame the boy， so we took it down.

Taking down the rope would be a good idea if there were no ropes in life. But theyre everywhere. Theyre in every goal， unrealized and expectation not met. The point everyone missed about the rope is that you werent supposed to make it to the top. It was there to create a fire that burned in the oversized belly （肚子） of every kid.

The groundhog （土撥鼠） has been considered a weather prophet （預(yù)言家） for many years in north America.

According to legend， all winter long the furry groundhog sleeps in his comfortable underground home， or hole. On February 2， he wakes up. Many of the worlds tallest buildings will make you dizzy if you reach their top. But these grand buildings could soon look like bungalows in comparison to a three-mile-high skyscraper which it is said could be built by 2062.

The skyscraper is the idea of Arconic， a materials science company based in New York， as part of its larger campaign called “The Jetsons”—which shows respect to the 1962 cartoon. Arconic has imagined the skyscraper created using materials that are either in development or have already been brought to market， including smog-eating surfaces and retractable （可伸縮的） balconies.

Sherri McCleary， one of Arconics chief materials scientists， says one of the most exciting and immediate projects is EcoClean， a special coating that helps buildings self-clean and purify the surrounding air. It was first released in 2011 and offers a number of benefits over traditional glass windows.

EcoClean uses a mix of chemicals， which use both light and water vapor to produce atoms known as free radicals （自由基）. These free radicals draw in pollutants in the air， breaking them down before they fall off the side of the building.

Another creation is in the windows themselves， which Arconic also hopes could be a part of the three-mile-high tower. The new design is called Bloomframe. Essentially， its a motorized window that changes into an all-glass balcony in under a minute.
