It is Chinese New Year's Eve.The streetsare lined withred lanterns, character posters, fireworks and offerings.People exchange greetings as they run intoeach other, “xin nian yu kuai, gong xi fa cai! ” I walk along the street to my house, exchanging greetings with neighbors and strangers, but mostlymet withsurprised stares.A foreigner! And one who speaks Chinese!
I am spending my year abroad in Nanjing,China. For China, the city is relatively small, especiallycompared toShanghai and Beijing with populations around 20 million. However,I am glad that I am hererather thanin a larger city.I wouldfeel lost ina city as large as Shanghai with its eleven subway lines. As Nanjing is the capital for six dynasties,it has as colorful culture as Beijing.
It is also less expensive to live here than in a larger city, but it offers the same amount of foreign food and pleasure that you would expect of a modern city.
If you are a newcomer here, there are also many ways to enjoy the culture and the language of China.Trying traditional Chinese Medicinal practices is a great way to open your mind and experience the culture of the country.Scraping(刮痧), cupping(拔火罐),and acupuncture(針灸)can help cure diseases such as headaches and stomach issues, and traditional massages(按摩)are both inexpensive and incredibly(極好地) relaxing.
In addition, you should also try to make some Chinese friends.Language partners and classmates make great friends, and they willshow you aroundthe city and take you to places you would never have gone to otherwise. When you get to China you shouldsign upfor a WeChat account, the Chinese version of instant messaging.Everyone here has one.
Another way to experience Chinese culture is to be here for holidays, especially the New Year.Reading about the fifteen-day celebration is nothing like being in the middle of it,and the fireworks that go off, while making you feel like you're in a war zone, is also magical. The skies light up, children run around in the empty streets, and you get a sense of how community-oriented China continues to be in the midst of its modernization.
Stay open-minded and try new things and you are sure to come back to be a more enriched and interesting person than you were before if you have an opportunity to travel to Nanjing,China.
