Sharing your personal data is almost impossible to avoid in todays digitally connected world. However, you could unknowingly fall for an online scam(詐騙), or criminals may hack the computer system of your bank or favorite store. Fortunately, MetLife Defender provides comprehensive protection against the full range of todays online risks—beyond your personal computer or device—to keep your personal data safe.

    The Good

MetLife Defender has all of the basic services and features that can be found at another identity protection company. The individual plan includes:

    ● Pre-approval offer and junk mail deletion

    ● Credit card monitoring and warnings

MetLife Defender is an average product and has a high monthly price, but what sets it standing out is its online child safety feature, which is an innovative approach to identity protection. We wouldnt recommend MetLife Defender only on its identity protection, but its online child safety feature is worth testing out with its free 30-day trial.

    The Family Plan

If the system detects any cyber-bullying(網(wǎng)絡(luò)欺凌) involving your child, it will automatically inform you. It covers two adult individuals and an unlimited number of minors—children up to the age of 18—living in the same household as the covered adults.

    Cancellation

If subscribers cancel a paid monthly subscription mid-month, MetLife services continue until the end of that month. After that, the subscriber will no longer be billed. Over the last few years a number of states and municipalities have passed laws prohibiting employers from asking job candidates about their salary history. And on Monday, the eve of Equal Pay Day, a U.S. circuit court of appeals(上訴法院) overturned a decision in a California case and supported a womans case for gender pay bias due to sharing her salary history.

The reason for the recent legislation and court cases is almost always related to closing the gender gap. While the degree to which disclosing pay impacts that disparity is in dispute, I believe there are other valid reasons for not asking, and it has everything to do with something that gets nary(沒有) mention: company culture.

During my years in human resources Ive witnessed the evolution of this practice and have come to adapt my views. The practice of asking “Whats your compensation?” is a vestige of a common-and-control management system that today is a few heaps of dirt from being destroyed. When I started my career in 1987, the salary history question was customary and candidates almost never blinked. Almost. That year I vividly recall an exchange and have carried it with me as buried doubt about how to approach the salary discussion. I was a recruiter of paid staff for the Chicago chapter of the American Red Cross, conducting a search for caseworker(社會(huì)福利工作者) candidates. At the end of a very good interview I asked the candidate his salary history. He was quite emotional in his response, “Its none of your business what my pay is! Thats private and I dont share it.”

In retrospect I know we lost him right there. The hiring manager and I both wanted to offer him a position, but the old-school HR head would not budge—no salary history, no job offer.

Candidates start experiencing your company culture at all stages of the interview process. How an employer treats a candidate—those selected and not—determines a level of mutual respect, whether a candidate accepts an offer, and how they talk about a company afterward.

Blindly following bygone hiring “norms” is not going to impress todays candidates and, most important, probably wont reflect well on your culture. As the workforce becomes increasingly populated by millennials (千禧一代), employers are finding they have to adapt to them and their desires, not the other way around. Inquiring about salary history is viewed by many as insensitive and mostly irrelevant.

There are better ways to address pay and theyre very simple. In the screening process Ive found it productive to simply ask candidates, “What are your salary expectations for this role?” Sometimes candidates are very direct in sharing this. Or sometimes theyll volunteer their compensation at their most recent employer. Either way, this approach allows for the quick, respectful reality check so things can move forward.

Of course there are reasons that candidates would be resistant to this question. Some might believe answering constrains their negotiating ability. At this point an employer might share a range of pay that reflects market data, often easily accessible to both the company and candidate.

A companys culture is a collection of accepted behaviors, and Ive learned that culture is a most sacred thing. It is the good dirt from which everything grows.

Organizations should always be asking whether their recruiting practices align with their culture. Do they build respect and trust? Transparency is driving a different hiring dynamic and actually serving to defuse what in the past were sometimes acrimonious(充滿火藥味的) interactions.

    39. The third paragraph is intended to show ???.

    A. great changes have taken place in company culture.

    B. the practice of asking salary history has gradually changed.

    C. the command-and-control manage system has come to an end.

    D. some candidates tend to get irritated easily.

    40. The underlined word in Paragraph 4 likely means ???.

    A. disagree?B. decide

    C. compromise?D. confirm

    41. The author might agree ???.

    A. Recruiters had better not ask candidates any questions about salary history.

    B. The company culture determines what candidates they are to employ.

    C. Recruiters can raise salary questions in a roundabout way.

    D. The company culture has also witnessed an evolution.

    42. We can safely conclude that ???.

    A. Company culture is a collection of accepted behaviors.

    B. The candidates have every reason to avoid answering salary questions.

    C. Following past hiring practice is very blindly and unacceptable.

    D. Some candidates feel at a disadvantage after responding to salary questions.

    43. Whats the best title of the passage?

    A. Asking salary history is bad company culture.

    B. Great importance ought to be attached to company culture.

    C. Recruiting practice should align with company culture.

    D. Whether to disclose pay in interview is in dispute.

    C

“Image is everything.” An entire industry has been built upon the assumption that image is everything, but when it comes down to it, an appealing image is not enough. If there is no substance(事實(shí))behind the image, the product, service or person will fail eventually.

First of all, one should consider how important image is in the selling of products and services. Advertising agencies have raised the art of creating an image to a state of near perfection. Public concept of that product or service is certainly managed by the images created by the advertising agencies. But if the product or service does not live up to the image that was created, the customer will be very dissatisfied and possibly ask for their money back. For example, the Arthur Andersen accounting firm had spent decades building up an image of trustworthiness. But the recent scandal (丑聞) showed that behind that image, it cheated in business practices. Despite the previous positive image, the firm is being accused of criminal actions and it will probably not survive as a business unit. Although the image had been nearly perfect, the reality behind the image has led to the downfall of the world famous accounting firm.

Similarly, personal advisers can build up a public image for politicians and movie stars. Putting out positive news releases, making sure that only the best photographs are published, and ensuring that the person is seen in all the right places can build up a very positive image in the view of the general commons. But once again, history is filled with examples of both politicians and movie stars that fell from grace like the story of the Hollywood actor giving in to the pressures of fame and fortune. With people, just as with products and services, image is certainly important, but without positive substance behind the image, failure is close.

To summarize, it is clear that an appealing image is extremely important to success, whether that image is related to selling a product or service or to the “selling” of a person. But image is only half of the equation. What lies behind that image is every bit as important as the image itself—the person or product must deliver on that image or there is little chance for long-term success.

    44. The downfall of the Arthour Andersen accounting firm is due to ???.

    A. its dishonesty in business

    B. its previous images

    C. its bad management

    D. its poor service

    45. Why did some famous people fall from grace?

    A. Their images were not well built up.

    B. They failed to live up to their images.

    C. They felt much pressure from the public.

    D. They paid little attention to fame and fortune.

    46. The structure of the passage is ???.

    A: Argument??P: Point??C: Conclusion

    47. The author tries to argue that ???.

    A. image creates everything

    B. image is the key to success.

    C. truth is unlikely ever to be equaled

    D. truth and image are equally important

    D

Are we getting more stupid? According to Gerald Crabtree, a scientist at Stanford University in the US, we are.

You may not want to hear this, but Crabtree believes that human intelligence reached its peak more than 2,000 years ago and ever since then has been going downhill. “If an average Greek from 1,000 BC were transported to modern times, he or she would be one of the brightest among us,” Crabtree told The Guardian.

At the heart of Crabtrees thinking is a simple idea. In the past, intelligence was critical for survival when our ancestors had to avoid dangerous animals and hunt for food. The difference of being smart or stupid is often life or death. However, after the spread of agriculture, when our ancestors began to live in dense(稠密的) farming communities, the need to keep their intelligence in peak condition gradually reduced.

This is not hard to understand. Most of the time, pressure is what keeps us going—you need the pressure from your teachers to finish your homework; the pressure of looking pretty prompts you to lose weight when summer comes. And the same is also true of our intelligence—if we think less, we become less smart.

These mutations(變異) are harmful to our intelligence and they were all developed in the past 3,000 years. The other evidence that Crabtree holds is in our genes. He found that among the 2,000 to 5,000 genes that we have that determine human intelligence there are two or more mutations in each of us.

However, Crabtrees theory has been criticized by some who say that early humans may have better hunting and surviving abilities, but people today have developed a more diverse intelligence. For example, spearing a tiger doesnt necessarily require more brainpower than playing chess or writing a poem. Moreover, the power of modern education means a lot more people have the opportunity to learn nowadays.

“You wouldnt get Stephen Hawking 2,000 years ago. He just wouldnt exist,” Thomas Hills of the University of Warwick, UK, told Live Science. “But now we have people of his intellectual (智力的) capacity doing things and making insights that we would never have achieved in our environment of evolutionary adaptation.”

    48. What is Crabtrees recent finding according to the article?

    A. The Greeks from 1,000 BC could have been the smartest in human history.

    B. Our ancient ancestors had no better surviving abilities than we do nowadays.

    C. Humans have been getting steadily more intelligent since the invention of farming.

    D. Mutations in genes that decide human intelligence have affected the development of intelligence.

    49. According to Crabtree, ancient humans ???.

    A. were forced to be smart due to natural selection pressures

    B. had much more genes that determine human intelligence

    C. relied more on group intelligence than individual intelligence

    D. developed a diverse intelligence to adapt to the severe realities

    50. What is Thomas Hillsattitude toward Crabtrees theory?

    A. Supportive.?B. Concerned.

    C. Unfavorable.?D. Puzzled.

You want to be confident and feel confident, but what if youre starting with little or no confidence? True self-confidence isnt an overnight acquisition. It takes dedication to realize you are a good human being that is worthy of respect and love.

    Recognize your insecurities

What does that voice in the back of your mind say? Why do you feel uncomfortable or ashamed of yourself? This could be anything from regrets to friends at school or negative experience. Whatever is making you feel unworthy, or ashamed, identify it, give it a name, and write it down. You can also tear these written pieces to start feeling positive on those points.

    Get rid of insecurities gradually

Each day you should weaken it. Theres no quick fix. Get to the root of the problem; focus on it and understand that you need to resolve each issue before you can move on. Check if it is an old past emotion and if it is really still relevant or applicable in your life today. And that does not mean you have to get rid of whatever makes you feel bad (many times, you simply cant). You need to learn to accept yourself, your past, your circumstances as they are, without necessarily thinking of them as “bad”.

    Identify your successes

Everyone is good at something, so discover the things at which you do extremely well, then focus on your talents. Give yourself permission to be proud of them. Give yourself credit for your successes. Inferiority (自卑) is a state of mind in which youve declared yourself a victim. Do not allow yourself to be victimized.

    Be Positive

Avoid self-pity, or the pity and sympathy of others. Never allow others to make you feel inferior—they can only do so if you let them. If you continue to dislike and look down upon yourself, others are going to do and believe likewise. Instead, speak in a positive way about yourself, about your future, and about your progress. Do not be afraid to show your strengths and qualities to others. By doing so, you strengthen those ideas in your mind and encourage your growth in a positive direction.

    Apply “facial feedback theory”

Studies surrounding whats called the “facial feedback theory” suggest that the expressions on your face can actually encourage your brain to express certain emotions. So look in the mirror and smile every day, and you might feel happier with yourself and more confident in the long run.

    Help others

When you know youre of help to the people around you, and are making a positive difference in other peoples lives (even if its just being kinder to the person who serves you coffee in the morning), youll know that you are a positive force in the world—which will boost yourself confidence.

Now, dear friends, will you let confidence keep you company? Be confident, and accomplishing your goals will be just around the corner.

    五、書面表達(dá)(滿分20分)

    閱讀下面的短文,然后按照要求寫一篇150詞左右的英語短文。

Teenagerssecrets should be kept to themselves and no one else, their parents included, has the right to stick their nose into their private life. As we know, teenagers are going through a special period of development both physically and psychologically. They are curious about and puzzled by the unexpected changes in their body and mind. Whats more, exposed to a world of adults, it is only too natural for them to begin imitating adultsbehaviors in secret. Boys begin to smoke and girls begin to spend time doing their hair. Some even begin to date with a girlfriend or boyfriend without their parentsknowledge. They are doing all this in secret because they are still unsure whether it is right to do so and afraid that, if found out by their parent, they will get misunderstood and even punished. And in fact, in many cases, the parents can not deal with the matter well and hurt their childrens feelings badly, making children no longer willing to communicate with their parents. When this happens, it hurts terribly the whole family feeling. So it seems right that teenagers should keep their secrets to themselves and their parents should allow their children that right.

    【寫作內(nèi)容】

    1. 以約30個(gè)詞概括上文的主要內(nèi)容。

    五、One possible version:

The passage mainly tells us that teenagers prefer to bury secrets in their mind rather than share them with their parents for fear that they may get misunderstood or even punished. Practically, teenagers are going through a special period, often puzzled by their physical and mental changes. Afraid to get misunderstood by their parents, they choose to copy adultsbehavior secretly.

This idea sounds acceptable but is actually of no benefit. Childrens secrets should in part, if not all, be shared by their parents. Keeping them to themselves may lead to unimaginable harm. Speaking from my experience, unlike many other teenagers, I always let my parents know my secrets. They are always ready to offer me valuable advice about how to deal with my troubles and puzzles. I am very happy to have such understanding parents, who contribute a lot to my happy life during this special life stage.
