Bees are among the world's most important food suppliers. One third of the world's food production is depending on pollination, where bees play the largest role.
By creating these beehives, we bring more bees to the city. We want to give visitors information on how they can contribute to the environment, and become involved with the bees.
The two beehives are appropriately placed at Mathallen, on the rooftop of Dansens Hus,not only for the food and honey relationship, but also naturally and contextually with many of the green spaces in the area, such as Akserselva and Kolonihagen Grünerl?kka.
The natural honeycomb geometry was our inspiration for the form and pattern. Having two intersecting hexagonal volumes to create the form, which were then adjusted in height and width to fit with the need of the beekeeper. Using a light coloured fi nished wood surface that is honey in tone was also a relationship that we wanted to create and present.□

HE Keren: Sn?hetta from Norway has already designed and built a lot of buildings all over the world. Most of their works represent a kind of Scandinavian design concept, as they posed on their oきcial webpage – "Our projects are examples of attitudes rather than designs."Having a beehive on top of the roof in a city, as part of urban farming, is an attitude as well. The hexagonal form, pattern and honey hued painting are quite straightforward and simple designs. While it lacks of detail operational description in the texts.
SHE Yishuang: We rarely see beehives from which honey, as a common food, comes. The unfamiliarity is an epitome of our understanding of food in modern society. People in cities have almost no opportunities to know the process of producing food, not to mention a personal experience in natural food chain. Consequently, the connection between human beings and nature becomes more and more weak. The beehives perhaps cannot produce the best honey, but they can constantly remind people of the existence of the natural orders. The design and fabrication of those beehives are made according to designer's imagination of an ideal habitat for bees, rather than conventional standardised products. The project is a romantic experience of nature education. (Translated by ZHANG Jingqiu)
