紐約（New York）是美國(guó)第一大城市，世界第四大城市。你知道它有哪些綽號(hào)嗎？

1.The Empire City帝國(guó)城市

David Stravitz first printed this name in his photographic book titled New York,Empire City:1920—1945.It represents New York City's wealth and resources.First president George Washington saw New York as“the seat of empire”.

大衛(wèi)·斯塔拉維茲在他出版的畫(huà)冊(cè)《紐約，帝國(guó)城市：1920—1945》中首次將紐約稱(chēng)為“帝國(guó)城市”。它代表了紐約市的財(cái)富和資源。美國(guó)第一任總統(tǒng)喬治·華盛頓稱(chēng)紐約為“帝王之座”。

2.The Big Apple大蘋(píng)果

Jazz musicians called New York City“the Big Apple”in the 1920s and 1930s.They got the term from a horse track worker who said where to a horserace in NYC was referred to as“the Big Apple”.

二十世紀(jì)二三十年代，爵士樂(lè)音樂(lè)家們稱(chēng)紐約市為“大蘋(píng)果”。他們主要是從賽馬場(chǎng)工人口中得知的，那些賽馬場(chǎng)工人在談?wù)摷~約賽馬地時(shí)稱(chēng)紐約市為“大蘋(píng)果”。

3.The City that Never Sleeps不眠之城

New York City's nickname is popularized from lyrics in the song New York,New York by the one and only Frank Sinatra.

紐約的這個(gè)綽號(hào)之所以有名，是因?yàn)楠?dú)一無(wú)二的弗蘭克·辛納屈在歌曲《紐約，紐約》的歌詞里唱過(guò)。

4.World's Biggest Urban Playground全球最大的城市運(yùn)動(dòng)場(chǎng)

NYC was named this because immigrant children played stickball（n.<美>棍球）throughout the New York streets in the 1930s.

紐約市得此名字是因?yàn)樵诙兰o(jì)三十年代的時(shí)候，移民的孩子總會(huì)在紐約街道上打棍球。

5.The Melting Pot大熔爐

The term Melting Pot was first used in publication by Israel Zangwill in his play adapted from Shakespeare's Romeo&Juliettitled The Melting Potin 1908.

“大熔爐”這個(gè)稱(chēng)呼最初是伊斯瑞爾·贊格威爾在1908年的戲劇《大熔爐》里面用的，這部戲劇是他對(duì)莎士比亞的《羅密歐與朱麗葉》的改編。

6.Manhattan曼哈頓

Man hat tan was the nickname usedbythe Algonquin Indians when the island was first settled by the Dutch in the 1620s.The name Manhattan was quickly adopted by the settlers and today is the official name of the most famous borough（行政區(qū)）.

十七世紀(jì)二十年代，荷蘭人首次在這個(gè)島定居下來(lái)的時(shí)候，阿爾岡琴族印第安人就已經(jīng)用“曼哈頓”這個(gè)綽號(hào)稱(chēng)呼這個(gè)島了。定居下來(lái)的荷蘭人迅速接受了這個(gè)名字。如今，“曼哈頓”已經(jīng)是這個(gè)著名的行政區(qū)的官方名稱(chēng)了。

7.The City of Skyscrapers摩天樓之城

New York City has more skyscrapers than any other city in the world.Many NYC buildings have had the honor of the tallest in the world at one point.

8.The Metropolis大都會(huì)

Metropolis is the fictional name of the New York City cloned in the comic book Superman.

“大都會(huì)”這個(gè)名字來(lái)自于一本叫《超人》的漫畫(huà)，漫畫(huà)中的這個(gè)城市就是克隆紐約的。

9.The Financial Hub世界金融中心

10.Gotham City高譚市

Washington Irving wrote a satire titled the Salmagundi Papers calling New York City the name Gotham in 1807.Batman and DC Comics took it from there.

華盛頓·歐文在1807年寫(xiě)了一部名叫《雜談報(bào)》的諷刺作品，他在其中稱(chēng)紐約市為“高譚市”。《蝙蝠俠》跟DC漫畫(huà)公司都是從這里引用了這個(gè)名字。
