IBM在北京的新總部將坐落在中關(guān)村軟件園。其所在區(qū)域呈橢圓形，在高度和紅線區(qū)等方面受到嚴(yán)格的控制。此外，IBM要求我們不僅要遵守中國的建筑條例，還要遵循美國的建筑法規(guī)。

與其將這些條條框框理解為一種限制，我們更愿意將他們作為設(shè)計的起點。我們將這些規(guī)定與IBM的要求相結(jié)合，營造出一個高效、環(huán)保、健康、以及富有生產(chǎn)力的工作環(huán)境。而由于在這座建筑中激發(fā)了許多知識產(chǎn)權(quán)方面的智慧，我們希望它會是一座更具內(nèi)涵的實體建筑。

首先，我們根據(jù)建筑的外部界限，創(chuàng)造了一個約為220米 x 50米的橢圓形“外殼”。其次，我們將這個外殼水平“切開”，兩個大的橢圓架構(gòu)在四個小橢圓上，上面兩層為開敞的辦公室，底層四個較小的橢圓為多功能廳，其中三個修建成花園，另一個將作為公司大堂。這些庭院滿足了整個龐大建筑在采光和通風(fēng)上的要求。在借鑒了北京傳統(tǒng)四合院的建筑理念后，這座建筑實現(xiàn)了東西文化的交匯和融合。

開放的辦公區(qū)位于頂部較大的橢圓內(nèi)，而公共活動和集體化的功能則可以在四個較小的橢圓內(nèi)實現(xiàn)。這個設(shè)計將各個空間融會貫通，并且將各庭院的內(nèi)部辦公區(qū)域連接起來。

The new headquarters of IBM in Beijing is located in Zhongguancun software park. The given plot had an ellipse outline and strict control of height and red line distance. Furthermore, IBM required us to not only follow Chinese building codes, but also American building codes as well.

Rather than considering these constraints as a limitation, we took them as a starting point of the design. We combined these with IBM requirements for an eきcient, green, healthy and productive oきce environment. As well with the wish to create a more introvert, solid building, due to the many intellectual properties that are developed in the building.

Firstly, we proposed a building envelope that fi nds the outer limits of the site, creating an ellipse volume that measures around 220 x 50 meter. Secondly, we divided this envelope horizontally,by proposing a large ellipse of two oきce fl oors that is positioned on four smaller ellipses on the ground fl oor. Positioning the top ellipse on the smaller ellipses leaves four interior courtyards in the building. Three will be used for gardens, one for the entrance lobby. These courtyards provide air and daylight within the large building volume. A reference to the traditional Beijing courtyard anchors the design in the context creating a link between old and new.

Open oきce fl oors are situated in the larger top ellipse, public and collective functions are situated in the smaller ellipses. This organization creates a very permeable composition of space,connecting to the interior oきce space of the courtyards.
