Being part of a new commercial development near Beijing Xihongmen, this mixed-use development consists of 150,000 square meters of offices, apartments, commerce and a mix of public and cultural functions.
The main ambition for this plot is dedicated to create a‘Creative Design District’. Eight towers are organized around a sunken plaza, creating a vibrant public area for public exchange and public life. On a larger scale, public space connections between neighboring sites and a subway station are established.
As a main condition for creativity, we explored the theme of exchange and communication, arguably being essential conditions of creativity. As such, the design inspiration for the loft towers draws back to one of China’s Great Inventions; the invention of printing blocks. The design elaborates on Zhang Yimou’s opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games, where one part of the performance consisted of the‘dancing printing blocks’.
Each loft is conceptually considered a ‘printing block’, shifted from its neighbor’s loft. Together these‘blocks’seem to present a whole story, but individually each loft still remains recognizable within the larger whole of the story. Just like each Chinese character tells a story, and different characters together may tell another story. The two office towers that mark the sites main entrance, follow a different strategy and are a more modern interpretation of communication, projecting an electric wave pattern over the glass facade.
