A continuous grid construction of brass filamentslinks up the exterior and interior spaces of the Sulwhasoo Flagship Store in Seoul’s luxury Gangnam neighbourhood. The Asian skincare brand’s customers are beckoned to be immersed in the latticework, guided by the subtle passageway and stairways within, and discover the rest of the fi ve-storey building which includes a boutique, auditorium, roof terrace, two spas, VIP rooms, and lounges. Taking inspiration from the Asian paper lantern’s bamboo framework, the designers explained in their statement that “the journey is a constant contradiction between two counterparts:enclosed to open, dark to light, delicate to massive.”Indeed, the grid teases out the void that it encloses and gives customers moments to pause and re fl ect on the complementarity of these binary opposites. Such spatial experience tells the story of the brand that is deeply rooted in Asian philosophy. Beauty is not only skin deep, but should be achieved by restoring the harmony and balance between humans and nature. As such, the palette brightens up from the basement and ground floor gradually each storey to the roof. The open-air lattice structure on the roof terrace offers the same continuity, surrounded this time not by the arti fi ce of the interior, but by natural elements and an open view of the city. The fi nal boundary between the interior and exterior seems to have dissolved, just as customers experiencing the building also explore “alldimensions of beauty, inside and out,” as the project’s principals-in-charge Lyndon Neri and Rosanna Hu describe their space-making strategy. Whether it be the space itself or the products and services offered within, the Sulwhasoo Flagship Store highlights design as both a unifying narrative and an aesthetic practice that redeem customers from the alienating experience of modern life.
