Less than a century ago， people were terrified by the appearance of the small TV set in stores. Many couldn&apos；t understand what was happening on the screen， while others even believed that there were little people living in those strange， new boxes. In the past decades， Hollywood movie producers and science-fiction writers let their imagination loose1）， coming up with bizarre2） concepts and ideas. Some of these science-fiction things actually exist in 2017， and to some， they might seem scary as the TV set was a long time ago.

Hoverboards3）

Every kid on the block wanted a hoverboard after Back to the Future was released. They look like a skateboard， but they are much cooler. Didn&apos；t you imagine what you could have done with one of these？ Well， they actually exist. Who knows when they&apos；ll become the next big worldwide trend？

Mosquito Drones4）

The drones haven&apos；t impressed you much？ Well， I want to tell that in the year 2017， we have mosquito drones. Yes， small drones that look like mosquitos. Don&apos；t worry！ They aren&apos；t meant to bite you—even though they could—they are mostly used to take pictures and follow movement.

Holographic5） Display

Holograms6） are one of the most sci-fi things anyone could have ever imagined， and the knowledge and technology needed for this seems far in the future. But just like 3D printers， gadgets7） that have holographic display are here and you can buy one yourself.

Cloud-based Data Storage

You might not be aware， but the way we store our data is pretty futuristic. No wires， no physical space， just a "cloud" where everything goes and can be transferred from one place to another. Even mobile devices have it， and these were pretty futuristic when your grandparents were young.

Doors That Clean Themselves

Cleaning takes time， and we would rather do something more productive and fun than doing house chores all day. But objects cleaning themselves seem like something taken from a science-fiction movie. Well， not anymore. Today there are door handles which sterilize8） alone.

Self-tying Shoes

Besides self-cleaning objects， wouldn&apos；t it be great to have self-tying shoes？ You might remember that those looked pretty cool in Back to the Future. Well， Nike released such a model in 2016. Buy a pair now if you want to feel like Marty.

This seemed like a technology of the distant future or of your science-fiction imagination. However， most televisions purchased today have this function， and all cable companies offer this option.

It might seem a banal9） thing in this list of science-fiction marvels， but concentrated food was only available to astronauts not long ago. Now， it is available to anyone， in any store. It might not be served from a tube， but it sure is delicious when you are hungry.

When the press announced the project， around 10 years ago， the world became mute10） when realizing how far scientific research has gone. Almost reaching the speed of light using man-made machinery really made the whole of humanity feel as if we were taking part in a science-fiction movie. But this is not a science-fiction movie. This is a machine that exists in 2017.endprint
