The Langkawi Archipelago is home to 99 scenic islands.蘭卡威群島有99座風(fēng)景優(yōu)美的島嶼。
The main island, also known as Langkawi, is a tropical paradise and home to just 95,000 islanders. lt sets itself apart from many other island destinations because of its natural assets of plants, animals, waterfalls, beaches, forests, islands, reefs and rock formations. Only a small part of the island is settled and, in most places, there is always a sense of being surrounded by nature with few buildings rising above the height of the coconut trees that line the beachfront.
While many visitors are content to enjoy all that the island's luxurious resorts have to offer, others travel here to take an adventurous walk on the wild side. With only three of the 99 islands in the archipelago settled, there's always an island to escape to.
Langkawi isn't a typical tourist island but more a natural paradise that incorporates luxurious tourist facilities. Travel here to enjoy its many fi ne resorts, superb restaurants, duty-free beverages and pampering spas but take some time to enjoy Langkawi naturally.
Langkawi's most popular tourist activity is to visit the mangrove forests lining the northern coastline of the main island to learn from informed nature guides about how these plants protect coastlines from erosion while being a valuable habitat for many animals. Mangrove forests were once wastelands best suited to fi lling in and levelling off but now they are recognised as a valuable natural asset. For example, the mangrove ecosystem is important to the fi shing industry as it is a habitat for many fi sh, crabs and prawns that ultimately get served in the island's restaurants.
Visitors can tour the mangroves from small covered boats that depart from Tanjung Rhu or the Sungai Kisap Mangrove Forest Reserve. ln addition to seeing several species of eagles and kites, tourists may observe several other types of birds and get a glimpse of monitor lizards and snakes that live in mangroves. Visitors enjoy the fact that they are on the water and in the fresh air for the whole time.
lt was Langkawi's natural assets that enabled parts of the island to be designated as a UNESCO World Geopark in 2007. Langkawi's rocks are considered some of the region's oldest dating back 550 million years and the Geopark not only protects the geology but also the plants and animals that thrive there.
Many parts of the island have limestone bedrock which results in the distinctive karst topography typical of northern Malaysia and neighbouring Thailand. Caves, suspended lakes and cliffs are features of this landscape and one of the best locations to admire the scenery is to go island hopping to Dayang Bunting lsland where a suspended freshwater lake provides a cool place to swim in crystal clear waters.
lsland hopping to other islands is possible and there is always an island to escape to for swimming or relaxing on beaches with few other tourists. Hire a car and explore the island and discover that it is the slow pace of island life that makes Langkawi so appealing.
