Track 7

I was in a sky blue1)motorboat crossing2)Myanmar’s peaceful lnle Lake注1—the second largest in the country. Surrounded by mountains and clusters of colorful floating homes, I became3)mesmerised as the water swayed to the beat of the lntha注2fishermen, who expertly4)manipulated their tiny wooden boats by rowing with only one leg.
With5)meditative expressions, a group of three fishermen6)deftly rowed by while standing upright. Each had one leg7)wrapped around a single oar, leaving their8)sunburned hands free to manipulate the9)conical fishing net they cast over the10)luminous water. This skill, unique to Inle Lake, takes a high level of balance,11)agility as well as strength. The fishermen have to determine the right amount of pressure to put on their free leg, while their other leg12)steers, turns and uses the oar to slow the boat down.
“One might think it is easy. I did!” laughed my local guide during a trip. “I’ve tried many times to practice that13)distinctive rowing style, but I always fell down into the water.”
As we passed through the floating14)community, the fishermen used the small boats to transport themselves around. They went to the floating markets and to pay their neighbors a visit by rowing from house to house. No one had fallen into the water.

Around 200,000 people comprise Inle Lake’s Nyaung注3township, which includes various Myanmar15)ethnicities. However, the Intha or “l(fā)ake people” make up the majority of the population. “The ‘In’ stands for lake and‘tha’ means people in Burmese,” said the local guide. The Intha community is16)self-sufficient when it comes to17)cultivating food and building materials.
“Their lives are dependent on this water,” our guide explained, adding that they live on shore or in floating homes and18)flourish by fishing and cultivating19)arable20)rice paddies on the river’s21)delta. They also build floating gardens to grow produce,22)piling weeds and23)compost on long poles fixed to the lake floor.
In the distance, I saw a group of fishermen gracefully using different equipment such as a conical net made from bamboo, and a24)vertical panel of netting to catch25)prized fish such as tilapia, featherbacks and snakehead. To attract the fish, they also used a type of26)rod and line with a27)barbed hook which is usually baited with small shrimp. These fishermen learn these rowing and fishing skills when they are children and help provide for their families by selling the fish at the lake’s market.
While believed to date back to the 12thcentury, the exact origin of this one-legged rowing practice is still a mystery. However, as I28)witnessed this amazing skill29)in person,I realized it has likely survived for hundreds of generations because of its distinctive advantages. The upright position allowed the fishermen to see across the lake and30)spot31)dense32)hyacinth weeds just below the surface, where fish could be hiding. The fishermen were also able to33)keep close watch on the bubbles created by34)shoals of fish. Ingenious, indeed.
I smiled, knowing that soon a perfect shade of darkness will35)engulf the lake. The night once again will loosen more36)knots as I37)drift off to dream.
