“Good evening, everybody!” said the teacher, Donna. “Where is everybody?” That was sort of a daily joke by Donna. Usually the class started with only two or three students present, and then filled up as the minutes went by. It was summertime. Summer school was only eight weeks long. Class attendance was always smaller than during fall and spring semesters.

“I dont know, teacher. Maybe they are late or dont come,” said one student. “Maybe watching TV football tonight.”

“Is there a soccer game tonight? It seems like theres a soccer game every night. Oh, well. Lets get started, okay? Were on page 36 in the workbook. Tonight were studying participles (分詞) as adjectives. Students are always confused when they learn about the present and past participles, so we will practice this a lot. Tonight, were just going to practice the present participle.”

“The present participle tells us what emotion or feeling the subject (主語) is causing. For example, ‘Grammar is boring means that the subject ‘Grammar causes an emotion of boredom. If we say ‘The movie is interesting, we are saying that the movie causes a feeling of interest. If we say ‘The roller coaster is exciting, we are saying that the roller coaster causes a feeling of excitement. Any questions so far? Am I confusing you? Is everyone confused?”

The classroom was quiet. Donna looked at blank faces. They were confused. She knew this would take a while. But eventually, the faster students would grasp (掌握) it, and then they would help the slower students. By the end of the evening, most of the class would feel comfortable using the present participle.

Donna erased the board and put some new examples on it. She loved guiding her students through difficult topics like this one. She always felt a little bit thrilled when the look of understanding came to their faces.

    4. What do you think the class is about?

    A. Grammar. B. A soccer game.

    C. School rules. D. Class attendance.

    5. How did Donna present the present participle first?

    A. By providing some examples. B. By explaining the concept to students.

    C. By drilling students on it. D. By talking about some topics.

    6. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 5 probably mean?

    A. Expressionless. B. Confused.

    C. Pale. D. Empty.

    7. Which of the following words can best describe Donna?

    A. Humourous. B. Energetic.

    C. Responsible. D. Strict.

Two winners of MacArthur Fellowships are being honored for their work with technology in the developing world. Amy Smith and David Green are among twenty-three MacArthur Fellows chosen for this year.

The MacArthur Foundation chooses highly creative individuals in the United States who show great promise for the future. People are nominated (推薦) secretly. There are no restrictions on how the award can be spent.

Amy Smith teaches at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. She who served in the Peace Corps in Botswana is a mechanical engineer who develops labor-saving technologies for poor people. One of her inventions is a low-cost machine to crush grain. Another is a device to test water quality without a laboratory.

In 2011, Amy Smith became the first female winner of the Lemelson-MIT Student Prize. She won thirty thousand dollars, but she says that she usually has very little money to pay for her projects, which she currently has several in Haiti.

David Green lives in Berkeley, California. He brings together experts to start companies that produce high-quality medical products at low cost. He calls his way of doing business “compassionate capitalism.”

Four years ago, Mr Green started Project Impact. This is a non-profit group that works to develop and produce medical technologies in several countries around the world.

Over the years, David Green also launched a project to sell high-quality hearing aids at a low price. Nuclear powers danger to health, safety, and even life itself can be summed up in one word: radiation (輻射).

Nuclear radiation has a certain mystery about it, partly because it cannot be detected by human senses. It cant be seen or heard, or touched or tasted, even though it may be all around us. There are other things like that. For example, radio waves are all around us but we cant detect them or sense them without a radio receiver. Similarly, we cant sense radioactivity without a radiation detector. But unlike common radio waves, nuclear radiation is not harmless to human beings and other living things.

At very high levels, radiation can kill an animal or human being totally by killing masses of cells in vital organs. Even the lowest level of radiation can do serious damage. There is no level of radiation that is completely safe. If the radiation does not hit anything important, the damage may not be significant. This is the case when only a few cells are hit, and if they are killed completely, your body will replace the dead cells with healthy ones. But if the few cells are only damaged, and if they reproduce themselves, you may be in trouble. They reproduce themselves in a deformed way. They can grow into cancer. Sometimes this does not show up for many years.

This is another reason for some of the mystery about nuclear radiation. Serious damage can be done without the victim being aware at the time that damage has occurred. A person can be irradiated (照射) and feel fine, then die of cancer five, ten, or twenty years later as a result. Or a child can be born weak or liable (有……傾向的) to serious illness as a result of radiation absorbed by its grandparents.

Radiation can hurt us. We must know the truth.

    12. Why is radiation mysterious to people?

    A. Because its powerful. B. Because it cant be sensed by human.

    C. Because it can cause serious damages. D. Because people cant detect it with a detector.

    13. The underlined word “deformed” in Paragraph 3 has the similar meaning to “___”.

    A. unnatural B. normal C. usual D. proper

    14. What can we infer from the passage?

    A. Radiation can kill living creature by killing a few cells.

    B. Radiation can be spread among relatives.

    C. Radiation has nothing in common with radio waves.

    D. The lowest level of radiation can lead to cancer.

    15. Whats the authors main purpose in writing this passage?

    A. To discuss the cause of cancer.

    B. To introduce the nuclear power.

    C. To uncover the mystery about radiation.

    D. To emphasize the importance of protection against radiation.

Sixty years ago, people asked about your astrological sign (星座). 16 These days, having a web address is almost as important as a street address. Your website is an electronic meeting place for your family, friends and millions of people around the world. Best of all, you may not have to spend a cent. The Web is filled with all kinds of free services and all it takes is time and creativity.

17 Like the table of contents of a book or magazine, the home page is the front door. Your site can have one or more pages, depending on how you design it.

While web pages vary greatly in their design and content, most use a traditional magazine layout (編排). At the top of the page is a banner GRAPHIC (標(biāo)題圖片). 18 Pictures, texts, and links to other websites follow.

Before you start building your site, do some planning. Think about whom the site is for and what you want to say. 19

Draw a rough layout on a sheet of paper.

While there are no rules you have to follow, there are a few things to keep in mind:

    ● 20 If you aim too high at the beginning, you may never get the site off the ground. You can always add something new to your site.

    ● Less is better. Most people dont like to read a lot of texts online. Break it into small pieces.

    A. Start simply.

    B. A personal website is not usual today.

    C. Nowadays, they want to know your website.

    D. Pay attention to the contents of your website.

    E. Next, gather up the material you want to put on the site.

    F. Next comes a greeting and a short description of the site.

    G. Think of your home page as the starting point of your website.

One evening after dinner, Mr and Mrs Tisich called a family meeting. “Weve had to make a difficult decision,” Mr Tisich announced. “You see, your mother has been offered a post as co-director of a television station in Chicago. Unfortunately, the station is not here. After thinking long and hard about it, weve concluded that the right decision is to move to Chicago.”

Marc looked shocked, while his sister Rachel breathlessly started asking when theyd be moving. “Its surprising, but exciting!” she said. Marc simply said, “We cant go—I cant leave all my friends. Id rather stay here and live with Tommy Lyons!”

The Tisichs hoped that by the time they moved in August, Marc would grow more accustomed to the idea of leaving. However, he showed no signs of accepting the news, refusing to pack his belongings.

When the morning of the move arrived, Marc was nowhere to be found. His parents called Tommy Lyonss house, but Mrs Lyons said she hadnt seen Marc. Mrs Tisich became increasingly concerned, while her husband felt angry with their son for behaving so irresponsibly.

What they didnt know was that Marc had started walking over to Tommys house, with a faint idea of hiding in the Lyonss attic (閣樓) for a few days. But something happened on the way as Marc walked past all the familiar landscape of the neighborhood; the fence that he and his mother painted, the tree that he and his sister used to climb, the park where he and his father often took evening walks together. How much would these mean without his family, who make them special in the first place? Marc didnt take the time to answer that question but instead hurried back to his house, wondering if there were any moving cartons (紙板箱) of the right size to hold his record collection.

    4. The conflict in this story was caused by ___ .

    A. he did not want to be left behind B. he realized his family was important to him

    C. he hoped to reach an agreement with his parents D. he wished to be a more responsible person

    7. What would be most likely to happen next?

    A. Marc would move the records to the Lyonss house. B. Mr and Mrs Tisich would call the police.

    C. Marc would join his family for house moving. D. Mr and Mrs Tisich would start searching for Marc.

Sydney—A shark savaged a schoolboys leg while he was surfing with his father at a beach in Sydney on February 23. It was the third shark attack along the coast of Australias largest city in a month.

The 15-year-old boy and his father were in the water off Avalon, on Sydneys northern beaches, around dawn when he was attacked. The citys beaches are packed with locals and tourists during the summer months.

“The father heard a scream and turned to see his son twisting (扭動) about in the water,” police said. “Fortunately, the shark swam away and the boy was helped to shore by his father.”

Lifesaving Club spokesman Nick Miller: “It got him around the top of his left leg and the father came and dragged him out of water.” He said the boy was bleeding heavily when he was brought to shore. “There was a lot of pain, as you can imagine.” The teenager was airlifted to hospital for treatment for leg injuries.

Police said the bites “cut through to the bone”, but the boy did not appear to have sustained any fractures (骨折). He was in a stable condition now.

Several beaches were closed after the attack. Water police and lifeguards were searching for the shark, while police hoped to identify its species by the shape of the bite marks. But they said it was too early to say what type of shark attacked the boy. “I dont even know if he saw it,” Miller said.

Many shark species live in the waters off Sydneys beaches, but attacks on humans are still relatively rare. However, there were two attacks on successive days earlier this month, one on a navy diver in Sydney harbor, not far from the famous Opera House, and the other on a surfer at the citys world-famous Bondi beach.

Fishermen say shark numbers are on the rise. There is a ban on commercial fishing in the harbor, which has increased fish stocks. Marine experts also claim environmental protection has created a cleaner environment, attracting sharks closer to shore as they chase fish. Many shark species, including the Great White—the man-eater made famous in Steven Spielbergs Jaws—are protected in Australian waters.

    8. What can we know about the city of Sydney from the text?

    A. It is the third largest city in Australia.

    B. Sydney harbor is not far from Opera House.

    C. There are many locals and tourists on its coast all year round.

    D. There are few shark species in the waters off Sydneys beaches.

    9. Which of the following is TRUE about the injured boy?

    A. He was losing much blood when he was dragged out.

    B. He was very nervous when he was sent to hospital.

    C. He may be in danger of losing his leg.

    D. He was injured in the right leg.

    10. Why is the number of sharks in Australia increasing?

    A. A ban on fishing was carried out.

    B. The film Jaws has made the Great White famous.

    C. All shark species are protected in Australian waters.

    D. Environmental protection has created a cleaner environment.

    11. What does the text mainly talk about?

    A. Shark attacks on humans are on the rise.

    B. A shark attacked a boy at a Sydney beach.

    C. Sharks attacked humans three times in one month.

    D. Shark numbers are increasing in the waters off Sydneys beaches.

An Australian company, Smart Car Technologies, has developed a system that lets drivers know when theyre speeding. When the technology becomes commercially available, it could help lead-footed drivers avoid tickets and also save lives. The company that developed the product hopes to convince Australian government agencies to put the technology into use in their automobile fleets.

The product, called Speed Alert, links real-time location data and speed obtained with the help of GPS to a database of posted speed limits stored in a drivers PDA (掌上電腦) or programmable mobile phone. The setup of the product does not need to be hooked up to a cars speedometer (速度表). In fact, it is entirely portable. It will also work with newer phones and PDAs that have built in GPS receivers. If a driver exceeds the speed limit, the speed is shown and an alert sounds.

Michael Paine, an Australian vehicle design engineer and traffic safety consultant, was hired to analyze the product. He told Live Science that his colleagues in the road safety field are “very enthusiastic” about what theyre now calling “intelligent speed alert.” Other research, according to Paine, shows that 40 percent of all traffic deaths involve speeding. There is also a potentially controversial future use: “Since the system is so portable, it would be easy to make it a requirement for teenage drivers to always use a speed alert device when driving,” Paine said. “The system even has the capability to record speeding violations (違反), so parents can monitor their teenage drivers.” The product will soon go on sale in Sydney.
