The two mayors shook hands after the game， and the Arvada mayor said， “Im really looking forward to those tomatoes.” As the Boulder team left the stadium， some unhappy fans threw ripe tomatoes at them.

A week later， the mayor of Arvada received a package of beautifully sliced tomatoes. He took them straight to his pig， which ate them right up. That night the mayor of Boulder asked his wife if Arvadas mayor had called. “No，” she said， “Why？” “Because I mixed a pint （品脫） of hot sauce （醬） into the tomatoes and I wanted to know how his pigs doing.”

Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. Its against the law to make false statements so they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might say， “Nine out of ten doctors advised their patients to take Yucky Pills to cure toothache.” It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Company.

This kind of deception happens too often. Its a sad fact of life： Lies are lies， and sometimes the truth can lie as well.

China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them， all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year， Ive found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However， people still use their bicycles to get around. For many， its the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors—silver， green， red， blue， yellow， whatever you want.

Its fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads， move skillfully through traffic， and ride even on sidewalks（人行道）. Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just cant provide.

Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture， I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.

The scene in the Hollywood movie The Day After Tomorrow， where global warming could soon turn the global climate into a new ice age， may never occur， according to a new research.

The next ice age could be 15，000 years away， said European scientists who last month announced a continuous record of 740，000 years of climate data obtained from the Antarctic ice.

Scientists from 10 nations have now almost completely drilled through a 3，000-meter depth of ice in the Antarctic mainland. They figured out that the area where summer temperatures can fall to -40℃， has at least 9，000，000 years of snowfalls， kept as neat as the growth rings of a tree. And the ice and air caught in each layer （層） have begun to answer questions about the global climates in the past.

The results show that there have been 8 ice ages in the past 740，000 years and 8 warmer periods. And by comparing the pattern of global conditions today with that of the past， the researchers reported in Nature that the present warm period could last another 15，000 years.

The research suggests that there is a very close connection between greenhouse gas levels and global average temperatures. It also shows that carbon dioxide （二氧化碳） levels are the highest for at least 440，000 years.

“If people say to you： the greenhouse effect is a good thing because we would go into an ice age otherwise， our data says no， and a new ice age is not hanging over our heads，” said Eric Wolff from the British Antarctic Survey. “Now we have 8 examples of how the climate goes in and out of ice ages， and you can learn what the rules are that go into the climate models that tell us about the future.”

Scientists found that whenever temperatures rose in the frozen record， so did carbon dioxide level. “In 440，000 years we have never seen greenhouse gas get as thick as it is today，” said Dr Wolff.

Lu Xun is one of the greatest Chinese writers of the 20th century. Besides his famous stories， he also wrote many influential articles about the living conditions of Chinese people.

Born in 1881 in a wealthy family， Lu Xun had a happy childhood. In 1893， however， his grandfather， a senior government official， was put into prison for taking money. At the same time， his father became seriously ill. From that time on， his family were no longer accepted by their relatives and friends. These early experiences greatly influenced his writing.

By the time Lu Xun arrived in Nanjing to study at university in 1899， he already believed that Chinese society had to change and become modern. In 1902 he went to study in Japan. There， he began writing articles for several Chinese student magazines. He showed a gift for writing and translating and he even wrote several books， although none was popular. He returned to China in 1909 because he was in need of money.

After working for several years as a teacher in Beijing， Lu Xun again returned to writing. In 1918， he wrote his famous short story Diary of a Madman. It was the first Chinese novel published using the everyday language that people spoke， which helped make it a great success. This， together with his novel The True Story of Ah Q （1921）， made Lu Xun a leading Chinese writer.

Although successful， Lu Xun still worried greatly about Chinas future. In 1926， he moved to Shanghai and gave up writing stories in order to devote himself to what he called “pen warfare”. He now only wrote articles which called on the people to fight against the government. For this， the government stopped him from publishing any more books. He was forced to write his articles using false names.

BEIJING—China has a growing middle class， a tradition of expecting education and 21 million new babies every year. Selling educational toys should be easy.

While China may be the worlds biggest toy maker， many of the best are exported. Department stores here do not have enough high-quality toys. It is said that the demand for educational toys is low.

A US company， BabyCare， is trying to change that with a new way to sell toys in China. BabyCare works basically together with doctors in Beijing hospitals. Police in Taiwan cannot decide whether to treat it as an extremely clever act of stealing or a cleverer cheat. Either way， it could be a perfect crime， because the criminals are birds—homing pigeons （鴿子）！

Demands for pigeon-delivered money stopped as soon as the press reported the story. And even if they start again， Chen holds little hope of catching the criminal. “We have more important things to do，” he said.

Burning the midnight oil before an exam or interview has an opposite effect according to a research which found that sleep is necessary for memories to be “downloaded” into the brain.

Those who slept the first night were much better at remembering the task while the second group showed no improvement in spite of enjoying two nights of catch-up sleep.

A further study by scientists at the Medical University at Lubeck in Germany showed that memories are laid down in two stages during the night. The first is during the deep， so-called “slow wave” sleep， which usually takes place in the first half of the night. The second， and less important stage happens during the period of dreaming or “rapid eye movement （REM）”. When people dont sleep well in the first half of the night， their memory consolidation is almost the same as having no sleep at all.

Medical research is leading American education officials to consider having high school classes start later in the morning. The research says that teenagers are more awake later at night than adults are. When staying up late at night， the teenagers have problems learning early in the morning.

Every country has many good people who help to take care of others. Some high school and college students in the United States often spend many hours as volunteers in a hospital， orphanage （孤兒院） or home for the aged.
