So, I think we’ve become a lot better recently at thinking globally, at taking seriously people who are at a distance from us. But what about people who are at a distance from us in time? So, I’m talking about future people, future generations. And I think that, in our world today, we’re still 2)dreadfully short-term as not 3)taking nearly serious enough account of the future.
So, how to deal with this? So, I’ve got a 4)proposal about this. I say let’s bring in a new political institution to sit above any 5)chambers of 6)parliament, and to be 7)empowered and required to 8)manifest concern and care for future people, and, indeed, to represent their basic interests to us, to represent to us the kind of 9)precaution that I spoke about earlier. How would these people be selected? My proposal, my suggestion, is that it’s a kind of “super jury”, a citizen’s jury of ordinary people, who come together to represent the future. And what power should they have? They should have the power to 10)veto any action that would 11)undermine the basic needs of future people.
