英語網(wǎng)絡詞匯漢譯策略初探

【Abstract】As one of the most remarkable inventions ever created by human beings in the 20th century， Internet has exerted great impact on various aspects of our lives. It brings people not only an unprecedented technological revolution， but also a cultural and linguistic revolution. Under such circumstances， net words—a new linguistic medium has drawn the attention from all circles， especially those in linguistics.

As an interesting， meaningful as well as challenging activity， translation is supposed to play a key role in the introduction of net words. It can be seen as a process of art creation， which has special rhetoric pursuance and techniques. Based on a general review of the features， development of the networds while combined with the aesthetics and cultural psychology of Chinese audience， this paper mainly explores the translation strategies frequently appeared in the English？鄄to？鄄Chinese translation of networds and the suggested appliance of translation techniques such as literal translation， free translation and transliteration， hoping to work out a satisfying solution to the tangling translation of English networds and make some contributions to enrich the Chinese language as well as accelerate cross？鄄cultural communication.

I.Introduction

The 21st century is recognized as the information era as well as e？鄄times. Millions of users from varied backgrounds around the world are using Internet. “The communication potential of the Internet is now available to a wider group of people， whose activities are centered on communication and information.” Along with its rapid development， cyber language affects peoples daily life in a large scale. Because of its special expressions， it has made a great impact on traditional language. The majority of netizens are young people who are more inclined to accept and use new things. They use net words not only on the Internet， but also in their daily life. The vocabulary of network is beginning to attract more and more attention.

Many linguists aboard have showed great interest in this field. One of them is David Crystal， the author of Language and the Internet. In his view， net words users are one of the most creative groups who adapt their languages for a variety of purposes. He argues， “the phenomenon of Networds， is going to change the way we think about language in a fundamental way， because it is a linguistic singularity—a genuine new medium.”In China， this important linguistic phenomenon stirs interest in some linguists， so they conduct research in the aspect of the words， or the syntax on the Net. And some linguists in China also collect and introduce the Internet jargons. Examples include： Dictionary of Netspeak， edited by Yu Genyuan， and Internet Language in Chinese， written by Liu Haiyan. But it seems that up till now， there are few researches on the translation of net words are conducted. Yet， as an effective way to promote cross？鄄cultural communication， its urgent to give rise to the study of creative translation strategies.

The translation of English networds is also a process of art creation， which has special rhetoric pursuance and techniques. Based on a general review of the features， development of the networds while combined with the aesthetics and cultural psychology of Chinese audience， this paper mainly explores the translation techniques frequently appeared in the English？鄄to？鄄Chinese translation of networds and the suggested appliance of translation techniques such as transliteration， literal translation， free translation and conversion， hoping to work out a satisfying solution to the tangling translation of English networds and make some contributions to enrich the Chinese language as well as accelerate cross？鄄cultural communication.

II.A General Survey on Net？鄄words

With the birth of Internet， people kept on discussing on the topic of cyber language. As we all know that Internet has acted as a genuine new media in the market economic. Cyber language refers to the language used on the Internet. Cyber language is another kind of saying for the other three words—“weblish， netlish， and internet language mentioned above.”Cyber language is a new word， and it just comes from two simple words—cyber and language， based on the word？鄄formation principle in English. As a matter of new thing， cyber language is not widely accepted by the linguists， and now there is still not any standard definition of cyber language. In the vision of cultural linguistics， the network language is a deposit with rich resources. Net words stem from nature language， but differ from nature language， as well as keeping a close link with it.

2.1 Features of Word？鄄formation

The formation of some net words follows the traditional methods such as “compounding， affixation， and abbreviation”， while some give old words new meanings， the others just change in the voice.

2.1.1Compounding.

Compounding is an efficient way to create new words in ordinary language. It is a word？鄄formation process consisting of joining two or more bases to form a new unit. Some examples are given below：

2.1.2Clipping

“The process of clipping involves deletion one or more syllables from a word， which is also available in its full forms.”The quick rhythm of modern life needs the rapid transmission of information. Net words coined by clipping fall into three types：

A. Back clipping.

Eg： Com = Commerce

Nick = Nickname

B. Front clipping

Eg： Site = Website

Bot = Robot

2.2 Evolution and Trends of Net？鄄words

Whether we admit it or not， net words， which are considered as imaginative and creative， has brought a lot of fresh items. Net words generated a demand for social development， which is the result of external and internal factors together. Its development almost follows the law of the evolution of Chinese vocabulary， but it has a little breakthrough. From the point of the evolution and the use of Internet vocabulary， there are three trends. The first is that “the Internet vocabulary will come to the society from the Internet and later on will be part o f standard Chinese. The second is that some Net words will stay just on line and be Internet language; the last is that some will disappear soon.”

The external factors are very critical in the evolution of language and vocabulary development. If it werent the birth of the computer Network， Internet worms， HDD and network card wouldnt have aroused. In addition to external factors， internal factors also have affected the evolution of the vocabulary. Due to term， the network will have three trends： the first one is walking down the network and integrating into society， then become a part of the specification language. This part of the network vocabulary mainly includes some recognized vocabulary. Because of its strong vitality， they will increasingly be convention. Secondly， staying in the network and become a member of net. Modern Linguistics language defined dialect as variant， but it is undeniable that owing to occupation， class， age， gender， culture， upbringing， and social differences， these language communities often transform into another language variants. Thirdly， they may disappear promptly. Computer technology is an emerging Branch Technology， its constantly upgrading and elimination of outdated products， some basic vocabulary will die with the demise of the product.

2.3 Audience Psychology of Net？鄄words

The accurate reproduction of net word is the core issue of translation. But the meaning of the word is complicated. A good translation should also try to reproduce the original linguistic meaning and pragmatic meaning. Net words translation should also have a very significant indicator， that is， to pay attention to its audience on the translation of the psychological characteristics of the selection and acceptance. The psychological features include three aspects， namely， the pursuit of new and vivid aesthetic psychology， seeking novelty psychology and the pursuit of practical psychology.

2.3.1 Aesthetic Psychology

In the process of long？鄄term use of the language， people often see or use the same words， thus feeling monotonous. Reception Aesthetics，a newly developed discipline，is adopted as the theoretical background of this thesis.Sometimes people may be tired of too normal language. On the contrary， net words can appeal to them. For one thing， “modem”， which is from the network modem incarnation of “cat”， “cat”means “l(fā)ove” （when the Internet works fast） or “hate” （when the Internet works slower）. It can be seen that put emphasis on audience aesthetic psychology can make our language specification colorful and vividly. Another example is “WWW”， its full name is “World Wide Web” in English， translated as“萬維網(wǎng)”. The translation is fascinating.

2.3.2 Novelty？鄄seeking Psychology

Generally speaking， people who are good at controlling the network are generally younger， better educated generation. They are more receptive to new things. Anti？鄄traditional aroused their passion and concern. Although it is not logical and irregular， it will be accepted or even actively absorbed. More importantly， the network is the world of respected personality. It offered its users the full freedom of imagination and creativity of the space. For example， “Yahoo” is a well？鄄known web search engine， which was named after “Gulliver？蒺s Travels” in the human？鄄faced animals， but also refers to all kinds of beasts and the lower animals. “Yahoo” on behalf of those who have neither the economic nor education of foreign tourists， and they are very similar to these computers. It is translated into “雅虎”， with a strange， new meanings steep out memorable. There are other translations that audiences are keen on： honker， email， and cookie. It is illustrated that the open environment of network interactions has deepen the openness and freedom of network language.

Technology（信息技術）These strange foreign words may give audience feeling of diaphragm and difficult at the beginning， but after a brief acquaintance and the absorption time， the translation has become familiar， a kind of saving time， effort and provincial hearts “translation”.

III.Conclusion

As a new means of communication， net vocabulary is a kind of language full of passion，and does not obey the rule of the traditional language. Under such circumstances， to prevent the confusion of different translated versions and protect the intelligent property become urgent.In the previous chapters， the significance of net words translation is demonstrated， and some translation strategies based on the priority of audience？鄄orientation and ascetics are proposed. In the light of related theories in ascetics and pragmatics， this paper explores the new field of net word translation. The author holds that the strategies of translation are changeable rather than fixed， contingent rather than eternal since it is almost impossible to limit the expansion and passion of networds. Networds translation， is ultimately an issue of choice， this is partly due to the discrepancy between English and Chinese culture， and partly due to how phrases are constituted in different languages. What the translator has to do is to choose one of the possible version in the target culture until the meaning interpretation are satisfied. Generally speaking， we have to choose the one which can convey all that of the original meaning and try to use as beautiful diction as possible so as to arouse the audiences interests and meet their psychological needs. Facing with the current chaotic state in the field of networds translation in China， both ordinary users， and full？鄄time translators should keep up with the pace of the information age by updating information all the time. Otherwise， it may easily causes misunderstanding for audience who dont know English or who are English users but do not know the original words ahead of time， which leads to a negative effect on cross？鄄cultural communication. Therefore， there is still great room in the field of net words translation， and many problems are waiting to be solved. This paper is just a trial to spark more in？鄄depth points by others.
