Nigerian Alliance for Clean Cookstoves (NACC) and First City Monument Bank (FCMB) have joined hands in an effort to alleviate the situation of Internally Displaced people (IDPs). IDPs who in addition to being displaced from their homes, face grave health and safety problems and also have become vulnerable people with very little access to some of the basic needs such as cooking fuel. FCMB and NACC as an initial and immediate gesture will be handing over 250 clean cookstoves to IDP families in Abuja. The stoves were handed over to the IDP families on Friday December 19, 2014. National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) and other organizations working with local communities were also present at the occasion.
Clean cookstoves in addition to efficient and economic cooking, will also address the risks associated with the collection, supply and use of firewood and charcoal, in an emergency situation. Such risks include increased vulnerability to sexual and gender-based violence or assault during firewood collection, loss of livelihood and educational opportunities, environmental degradation, and respiratory and other illnesses that cause premature deaths and child health problems.
“FCMB believes that all communities in which it operates should benefit from our presence. The Bank’s CSR initiatives are geared towards empowering people, especially the vulnerable and the disadvantaged. However, it prioritizes areas where it can have the greatest impact. FCMB, a founding partner of NACC, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has donated 250 units of clean cookstoves including pots and heat retaining wonder box to the Alliance for distribution. The donated clean cookstoves to NACC that were distributed to the IDPs living in Abuja are aimed at meeting an urgent need and thereby creating a positive impact” says a representative from FCMB.
NACC officials had discussions with aid agencies and organizations that support IDPs. According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) there are over 740,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) including people fleeing from Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States. One of the camps of IDPs in Abuja with nearly 8000 persons being victims of insurgency was recently discovered by a church who reported to NEMA. NACC officials have visited the camp, had consultations with the Church, Camp leaders and NEMA.
“This initiative marks the start of an innovative partnership that focuses on the pressing needs of some of Nigeria’s most vulnerable people,” says Mr. Ewah Otu Eleri, Executive Director of ICEED and the coordinator of the Nigerian Alliance for Clean Cookstoves (NACC), while distributing the stoves to IDP families in Abuja. “Working with FCMB, the Alliance is committed to ensuring that the cooking needs of vulnerable IDPs populations are met, and that these families have a better chance to lead productive, healthy lives while waiting for peace and security to return to their homesteads” added Mr. Eleri.
The distribution and use of clean cookstoves helps to lessen personal security risks, to more equitable access to energy technologies and fuel among families, to healthier living conditions for cooking and to reduce illness and injuries. This also helps prevent conflicts among the displaced persons competing for scarce resources such as firewood.
In a larger national context, NACC has built a public-private partnership to introduce 10 million clean cookstoves to Nigerian homes and institutions by 2020. The Alliance supports policy change, better technical standards and innovative financing in the development of a national clean cookstove industry. It works with public, private, and non-profit partners to scale up access to clean cookstoves in Nigeria. NACC is committed to being a catalyst for energy technology innovation, public-private collaboration, and culturally-appropriate solutions for better energy access.
The need for safe and clean cooking in Nigeria is huge. With ever increasing demand for clean cooking stoves, partnerships such as the one between FCMB and NACC in collaboration with government agencies and community organizations can help meet this demand rapidly on a national scale. NACC commits to partner with other well-meaning organizations to alleviate the energy challenges of IDPs in Nigeria.
