2011 Nobel Peace Laureate Leymah Gbowee is a Liberian peace activist, trained social worker, acclaimed public speaker and women’s rights advocate. She is founder and current President of the Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa. Her leadership of the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace -- which brought together Christian and Muslim women in a nonviolent movement that played a pivotal role in ending Liberia’s civil war in 2003 -- is chronicled in her memoir, Mighty Be Our Powers, and in the award-winning documentary, Pray the Devil Back to Hell. She has appeared on numerous television programs including CNN, BBC, and France24. She was the founding head of the Liberian Reconciliation Initiative, and was the Co-founder and former Executive Director of Women Peace and Security Network Africa (WIPSEN-A).
An Oxfam Global Ambassador, she serves on the Board of Directors of the Nobel Women’s Initiative and is a member of the African Women Leaders Network for Reproductive Health and Family Planning. She has received honorary degrees from Rhodes University in South Africa, the University of Alberta in Canada, Polytechnic University in Mozambique, Cedar Crest College in the United States, and University of Dundee in Scotland. She holds a M.A. in Conflict Transformation from Eastern Mennonite University in Virginia, USA. She is currently a Distinguished Fellow in Social Justice at Barnard College. She travels internationally to advocate for human rights and peace security.

He has devoted many years as an inspirational champion for sustainable peace and development ardently advancing the cause of the global movement for the culture of peace. His determined leadership led to the UN General Assembly’s adoption in 1999 of the landmark Declaration and Programme of Action on Culture of Peace and to the Security Council’s adoption of its groundbreaking UNSCR 1325 on women’s contributions to peace and security. He was Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN (1996-2001) and served as Under-Secretary-General of the UN for the world’s most vulnerable nations from 2002 to 2007.

H.E. MRS. MARY ELIZABETH FLORES FLAKE
Ambassador Flores Flake became the first woman Ambassador of Honduras to the United Nations representing the Government of Unity and Reconciliation in 2010 and re-appointed by the new government in January 2014. She was elected as Vice-President of the UN General Assembly’s 67th Session in 2012. A leading political figure, she was elected to public office following a groundbreaking political reform in Honduras with the highest percentage of votes. She also became the youngest and the first woman to hold the position of the First Vice-President of the National Congress of the Republic of Honduras (2006-2010), leading many social, economic, and political initiatives. She put forward a progressive and human rights agenda with a bill to end all types of discrimination, and proposed a series of gender initiatives in education, electoral reform, labor, and family related matters.

As Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Deputy Executive Director of UN-Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women since 2011, she is responsible for the leadership and management of the Bureau supporting intergovernmental bodies, United Nations coordination and external relations. She has more than 37 years experience in peace and security, gender perspective and human rights related diplomacy.

MR. AHMAD ALHENDAWI
Ahmad Alhendawi of Jordan is the first-ever United Nations Secretary-General's Envoy on Youth. He assumed office in February 2013. Born in 1984, Mr. Alhendawi holds a Master’s degree in Advanced European and International Relations, a diploma as “Policy Officer in European and International Organizations” from the Institut Européen in Nice. He has been a youth advocate at the national, regional and international levels. He was a co-founder for Youth for Democracy Network at the Jordanian Commission for Democratic Culture which he headed. He is a co-founder of the International Youth Council, based in New York.

MS. KATHLEEN KUEHNAST
Director of the Center for Gender and Peacebuilding at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), Ms. Kuenhnast is co-editor of the volume, Women and War: Power and Protection in the 21st Century (2011), which focuses on the gap between international commitments like UN Resolution 1325 and the harsh realities facing women in war, as well as the critical role women play in peacebuilding efforts. As a socio-cultural anthropologist, her work examines the impact of political and economic transitions on societal gender roles.

MS. SANAM ANDERLINI
Sanam Naraghi-Anderlini is co-founder of the International Civil Society Action Network (ICAN) and a Senior Fellow at the MIT Center for International Studies. In 2011, she was the first Senior Expert on Gender and Inclusion on the UN’s Mediation Standby Team. For nearly two decades she has been a leading international advocate, researcher, trainer and writer on conflict prevention and peacebuilding. In 2000, she was among the civil society drafters of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security. As Director of the Women Waging Peace Policy Commission, she led ground breaking field research on women’s contributions to conflict prevention, security and peacemaking in 12 countries. She was Lead Consultant for a 10-country UNDP global initiative on “Gender, Community Security and Social Cohesion”. She has served on the Advisory Board of the UN Democracy Fund (UNDEF), and was appointed to the Civil Society Advisory Group (CSAG) on Resolution 1325. She has published extensively on gender, peace and security issues, including the book, Women building peace: What they do, why it matters.

Oliver Rizzi Carlson holds a Master of Arts degree in Peace Education from the UN-mandated University for Peace in Costa Rica and works with youth in advancing the culture of peace. A member of the Youth Team that prepared the World Report from Civil Society submitted to UN Secretary-General and to all Member States at the end of the UN International Decade for Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World (20001-2010), Oliver is currently Representative to the UN for the United Network of Young Peacebuilders (UNOY).

He has been the Director General of UNESCO from 1987 until 1999, Advisor to the President of the Spanish Government (1977-78), Minister of Education and Science (1981-1982) and Deputy in the European Parliament (1978). He is the founding President of the Fundación Cultura de Paz for implementation of the UN Programme of Action on Culture of Peace. He is the President of the World Forum of Civil Society Networks (UBUNTU Forum), former President of the Board of Directors of Inter Press Service, and since 2010 Chairman of the International Commission against the Death Penalty.

Dorothy J. Maver, Ph.D. is an educator and peacebuilder who has been inspiring cooperation on behalf of the common good. Dot is Program Director with Kosmos Associates, a founder and board member of the National Peace Academy USA, Global Alliance for Ministries and Infrastructures of Peace, and River Phoenix Center for Peacebuilding. She focuses on applied peacebuilding creating the conditions for a culture of peace.

MR. DOUGLAS ROCHE
Hon. Douglas Roche, O.C., is an author, parliamentarian and diplomat, who has specialized throughout his 40-year public career in peace and human security issues. He was a Senator, Member of Parliament, Canadian Ambassador for Disarmament, and Visiting Professor at the University of Alberta. He was elected Chairman of the UN Disarmament Committee at the 43rd General Assembly in 1988. Senator Roche was the founding Chairman of the Middle Powers Initiative, an international network of eight NGOs working for the elimination of nuclear weapons. The author of 21 books, his latest is Peacemakers: How People Around the World Are Building a World Free of War (Lorimer, 2014). In 2011, the International Peace Bureau nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Ms. Vibeke Jensen, Director, UNESCO Representative to the UN since September 2013, also leads the Secretariat of the Secretary-General’s Global Education First Initiative (GEFI) in New York. In 1989 she joined UNESCO as assistant to the Coordinator for Women’s programs. In 1994 she was transferred as Education Program Specialist to UNESCO’s area office for the Sahel (Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger). In 1997 she moved to UNESCO’s regional office in Bangkok as girls and women’s education program officer. On leave from UNESCO, she was Education Adviser to the Government of Nepal and UNICEF Pakistan’s Girls’ Education Specialist. She was Head of UNESCO’s Office in Vietnam and Director of the Cluster office in Dar es Salaam (Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, United Republic of Tanzania).

MR. MOHAMMED ABU-NIMER
Dr. Abu-Nimer is co-founder and co-editor of the Journal of Peacebuilding and Development. He is Director of the Peacebuilding and Development Institute at American University in Washington DC. and also serves as Senior Advisor to KAICIID in Vienna, Austria. Professor Abu-Nimer holds a PhD in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from George Mason University in Washington DC and a Master of Arts from Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He has conducted interreligious conflict resolution training and interfaith dialogue workshops in conflict areas around the world, including Palestine, Israel, Egypt, Northern Ireland, the Philippines (Mindanao), and Sri Lanka.

Dr. A.K. Abdul Momen is the Bangladesh Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN in New York since 2009. His country has been the lead sponsor of the General Assembly resolutions on the Culture of Peace since 1997. Dr. Momen was Vice-President of the UN General Assembly in 2012, and its Chair of the Second Committee on economic and financial issues in 2011-12. He was also Vice President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council for the 2011-2012 sessions. In 2010 he was the President of the UNICEF Executive Board. Prior to joining the UN, he was the Chairman of the Economics and Business Administration Department at Framingham State University, Massachusetts. He was working as an Economic Adviser under the Saudi Ministry of Finance and National Economy until 2003. Professor Momen has a PhD in economics, an MBA in business administration, an MPA in public administration, and a LLB in Law.
