James Cleveland Owens was the son of a farmer and the grandson of black slaves. His family moved to Cleveland when he was 9. There, a school teacher asked the youth his name.

    “J.C.,” he replied.

She thought he had said “Jesse”, and he had a new name.

Owens ran his first race at age 13. After high school, he went to Ohio State University. He had to work part time so as to pay for his education. As a second year student, in the Big Ten games in 1935, he set even more records than he would in the Olympic Games a year later.

A week before the Big Ten meet, Owens accidentally fell down a flight of stairs. His back hurt so much that he could not exercise all week, and he had to be helped in and out of the car that drove him to the meet. He refused to listen to the suggestions that he give up and said he would try, event by event. He did try, and the results were in the record book.

The stage was set for Owens victory at the Olympic Games in Berlin the next year, and his success would come to be regarded as not only athletic but also political. Hitler did not congratulate any of the African American winners.

“It was all right with me,” he said years later. “I didnt go to Berlin to shake hands with him, anyway.”

Having returned from Berlin, he received no telephone calls from the president of his own country, either. In fact, he was not honored by the United States until 1976, four years before his death.

Owens Olympic victories made little difference to him. He earned his living by looking after a school playground, and accepted money to race against cars, trucks, motorcycles and dogs.

“Sure, it bothered me,” he said later. “But at least it was an honest living. I had to eat.”

In time, however, his gold medals changed his life, “They have kept me alive over the years,” he once said. “Time has stood still for me. That golden moment dies hard.”

    56. Owens got his other name “Jesse” when __________.

I found the imagination of becoming a grandmother somewhat discouraging. I was younger than I thought a grandmother should be when I got the news that I was going to become one myself. I admit, it was not a role that I was emotionally ready to accept. I had been a young mother, and had certainly hoped my daughter would not face that same challenge. I remarried when she was a teenager, and then had two more children. On getting the news that she was expecting, I remember thinking “What do I know about being a grandmother? — I havent even finished raising my own kids yet!” I dont like to be unprepared, so I read a few books about grandparenting. That gave me a little help, but I was still uncertain. I thought about other grandmothers I knew, and got a few ideas I liked and a few more that I didnt. But I couldnt quite figure out what kind of grandmother I wanted to be. Then I thought about my own grandmother, Granny, as shes known by most people, and I knew I had the answer.

I didnt realize it until that moment, but my own grandmother was the example for the kind of grandmother I wanted to be. I am fortunate that I got to spend a lot of time with my grandparents when I was a little kid. Heres what I learned from my Granny.

Grandmothers always have a cookie jar. For my entire life, Granny always had a cookie jar full of cookies. When I was a little tiny girl, just at eye level with the counter, Granny would get the cookie jar down for me. When I was a little older I learned how to pull the chair over so I could reach. As I got taller, if I really stretched, I could reach the cookie jar with my finger tips and move it close enough to get it down off the counter to find out what kind of treat was inside. Always the first thing I did when I went to Grannys house was check the cookie jar, and there were always cookies in it. Many years later, Ill drive my own children to Grannys house and the first thing is get us all a cookie.

So grandmothers must have a cookie jar, and on my granddaughters first Christmas, my daughter bought me my own cookie jar. She said when they came to see me, her daughter would find the treat the way she did and I did.

Teenagers that use Internet social networking sites like Facebook are more likely to end up addicted to drink and drugs, according to researchers. Scientists at the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University, surveyed more than 1,000 children aged between 12 and 17 via an online poll[民意調(diào)查] and another 1,000 by telephone.

They found those who spent any time on social networks each day were five times as likely to smoke as those who didnt visit them. They were also three times more likely to drink alcohol and had double the chance of smoking cannabis[大麻].

This survey suggested peer pressure was playing a large role, with 40% of all teenagers seeing pictures of friends getting drunk on sites like Facebook and Myspace.

Half of the teenagers who said they had seen pictures of people being drunk or using drugs first saw such images when they were just 13 or even younger. Those who saw these images were more than twice as likely to be able to get alcohol in less than a day and much more likely to have friends and classmates who abuse illegal and prescription[處方] drugs.

Joseph Califano who is CASA Columbias Founder and Chairman said, “The relationship of social networking site images of kids drunk, or using drugs and of suggestive teen programming to increased teen risk of substance abuse offers some confirmation of the saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. The time has come for those who operate and profit from social networking sites like Facebook to use their technology to limit such images and to resist use of their sites to children and teens who post pictures of themselves and their friends drinking or using drugs. Continuing to provide the electronic vehicle for transmitting such images contributes to electronic child abuse.”

He said parents are often in the dark when it comes to the risks. He said an accompanying survey of nearly 500 parents found 86% did not think social networking sites would increase the risks of drinking alcohol.

    66. We know from the text that __________.

    A. most drug users visit social networks on a daily basis

    A. Too much pressure from studies.

    B. Lasting influence from parents.

    C. Frequently eating out with friends.

    D. Seeing pictures of drunken friends.

    68. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to Paragraph 4?

    A. Some teenagers would like to get alcohol every day.

    B. Half of the teenagers start using drugs at a young age.

    C. Negative images may have an immediate effect on teenagers.

    (D)

Its a popular dish eaten by millions of people. Its a symbol of wealth and power and is often served at weddings and banquets. Its shark fin[魚翅] soup, a traditional Chinese dish that is served in restaurants worldwide. To satisfy the growing demand for the soup, fishermen kill as many as 70 million sharks each year just for their fins.

Thats a big reason shark populations are falling fast. The numbers of the largest sharks including the famous great white shark have dropped by 90 percent since the 1950s. Scientists say that about one third of all shark species are at risk of becoming extinct.

American government signed the Shark Conservation Act in January. This law bans any U.S. boat from catching or transporting sharks without their fins attached. A bill introduced in California in February would take shark conservation a step further. It would ban the sale and possession of shark fins. That would include serving shark fin soup. Hawaii passed a similar ban last year.

Scientists say the practice of finning is a major cause of the collapse in shark populations. In finning, fishermen slice off the fins of live sharks and throw the bodies back into the water. Without their fins, the sharks sink to the ocean floor and die. Sharks are more vulnerable[脆弱] to overfishing than other types of fish. They grow slowly and have fewer offspring than other fish do. Sharks are often captured and killed faster than they can repopulate the waters.

Finning is also big business. Fishermen sell the fleshy fins to fish markets and producers of shark fin soup, mainly in China. A pound of fins might sell for as much as $ 200.

Why should we care about protecting these fearsome meat eaters? As the top ocean predators[食肉動物], sharks keep the populations of other fish from growing too large. If sharks were to be wiped out, their usual prey would reproduce unchecked. That could throw the ocean food chain off balance. “Removing the top level predators in the ocean has significant effects on its ecosystem,” said biologist John McCosker.

    71. Some American states made the law on the issue of sharks __________.

    A. to keep the tradition of serving shark fin soup

    B. to show the preciousness of shark fins

    C. to maintain the power of sharks

    D. to help protect these sharks

    72. Whats the possible result of overfishing sharks?

    A. Disturbing the balance of food chain of mankind.

    B. Damaging the oceanic ecological balance.

    C. Causing fishermen to be out of work.

    D. Decreasing the number of other fish.

    73. Which of the following couldnt be the cause of the collapse in shark populations?

    A. The practice of finning.

    B. Slow growth.

    C. Shark attacks.

    D. Fewer offspring.

    74. Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?

    A. Sharks live on other fish in the ocean.

    B. Shark fin soup is the symbol of Chinese food culture.

    C. Nowadays sharks are endangered.

    D. Sharks play an important role in the ocean food chain.

As the top ocean predators (食肉動物)和has significant effects on its ecosystem可知A、D兩項說法也正確。

    75. A 推理判斷題。通讀全文可知,由于魚翅湯之類特色菜肴的流行,致使鯊魚大量被捕殺,由此可推斷鯊魚數(shù)量急劇減少是人類造成的。
