“LA PENNA?!

Italian Teachers in Ruian
By Zhuang Yingchang
On Teachers Day this year, which falls on September 10 in China, Emanuela and Sabrina, both 25, were very pleased to receive greeting cards and paper flowers from their students. The two Italian young women are now teaching the Italian language in Fengling School, Ruian City in southern Zhejiang province. The cards and flowers were the first special gifts they received after coming to this homeland of many Ruian natives who are now in Italy and some other European countries.
Foreign teachers are now quite common in big cities across China, but Emanuela and Sabrina are a little bit unusual here in Ruian.
Ruian has a long tradition of seeing its local residents migrate to foreign countries since a long time ago. An incomplete survey indicates that 31 local residents in Fengling moved overseas in 1921 and that nowadays more than 7,000 local residents are living in foreign lands. Fengling is one of the three major sources of Ruian residents who have moved overseas.
Most children at Fengling School have parents or other relatives living as Italian citizens or overseas Chinese in Italy. They will soon join their parents or relatives in Italy and the language course they take will certainly help them adapt to a new life.
The two young women teaching in Fengling School is part of a program jointly conducted by the Ruian government and Cospe, an Italian organization engaged in Italy and worldwide education and cultural exchange programs designed to help emerging countries. Emanuela and Sabrina are from Cospe and they are in Fengling teaching children to speak Italian. A scholar of Chinese history and language, Sabrina is in Ruian to learn about China. Her teaching assignment in Ruian is her first experience of the oriental nation. She gets to know more about rural areas in China after getting mixed with children from mountains of Ruian.
Emanuela teaches children in the first and second grades while Sabrina is responsible for children in the fourth and fifth grades. The last class in the morning every school day is especially assigned for Italian language learning.
They like Ruian: the school is surrounded by mountains and forests and water is limpid. Life is simple and the people here are simple. The two young Italians have learned to use chopsticks and sip Chinese tea. However, Italian coffee is still their favorite.
I recently visited the two Italian women at Fengling School. I attended their classes and visited their dorms. They are excellent teachers and children love them. Their dorms reflect their lifestyle: tidy and orderly. The dormitory rooms are not big, but they are in shipshape. On the desks are their notebook computers. They have internet hookups at Fengling. Using the computers, they prepare their language teaching and search for teaching materials and communicate with their families and friends back in Italy.
