Noon in a compound near the railway in Beitan Community, Tianqiao District, Jinan City, an little old grey-haired man is cooking lunch for his seven children who will come back home from school…
The old man is named Zheng Chengzhen who is 62 years old. Without a full-time job, he lives on odd jobs and collecting waste products. The house he and his children live in is provided by other people.
Despite the fact that Zheng has not married all his life, he is a father to many waifs and strays. Since 1987, when he started to provide a home for the waifs and strays, thus far, he has helped more than 400 homeless children. In the 20 square meter house where he lives, he has sometimes provided accommodation for as many as 13 children at one time.
During the night time, when the children fall sleep, Zheng usually rides his tricycle to the railway station and bus station to look for any waifs and strays. According to his experience, this is the “golden time” to discover the waifs and strays.
After taking the waifs and strays back to his home, Zheng usually first of all provides accommodation for them, then tries his best to get in contact with the family of the children and send them back to their homes. Some of the children have gone back to their own home. As for the children who have no home to return, he takes the responsibility to take care of them until they grow up.
Some of the children have gone to university, some have joined the army, and some have had their own families. Seeing the growth of his children, Zheng feels very happy.
To support the body and soul of the children, Zheng must try his best to earn money. No matter how hard his life is, Zheng has never had the idea to give up. Through the camera lens, we can see the life of this great “father” and his children.
