Once upon a time， there was a father and a son. The son was very rude and often hurt others’ feelings with bitter words. So he had no friends and got more and more fretful(煩惱的) day by day. Ever wondered how we are able to conduct(進(jìn)行) a conversation at a noisy party? Researchers from Japan， Canada and Germany have found that it is our left brain that picks out the desired(想要) sounds from a cacophony(刺耳的聲音) of loud， competing(對抗) sounds. “In daily life， we are always exposed to several noises at the same time and we have to pick up important signals， for example， speech sounds， from the background noises，” wrote researcher Ryusuke Amiga from Japan’s National Institute for Physiological(生理性的) Sciences.

“We found that the left hemisphere(半球) is generally dominant(占優(yōu)勢) for auditory processing(聽覺處理) of noisy environments，” he wrote in an e-mail response(回答) to questions from Reuters(路透社).

It is well known that speech signals are processed(處理) in the left brain.

But this study， led by Hidehiko Okamoto and Christo Pantev at the University of neuroimaging(神經(jīng)成像學(xué)) and observed neural mechanisms(神經(jīng)機(jī)理) in volunteers whowere exposed to different combinations(組合) of tests and background sounds.

“Test sounds were played either to the left or to the right ear， while the competing noise was presented(呈現(xiàn)) either to the same or to the opposite ear，” they wrote.

“By monitoring(過濾) the brain’s response to these different sound combinations， the team observed that the left hemisphere was the site of most neural activity associated with processing sounds in a noisy environment.”
