Jane Austen, a famous English writer, was born at Steventon, Hampshire, on December 16, 1775, and died on July 18, 1817. She began writing early in life, although the prejudices(偏見) of her times forced her to have her books published anonymously(匿名地).

These days, most people in Britain and the US do not wear very formal clothes. But sometimes it is important to wear the right things.

Many British people dont think about clothes very much. They just like to be comfortable. When they go out to enjoy themselves, they can wear almost anything. At theatres, cinemas and concerts you can put on what you like—from beautiful suits and dresses to jeans and sweaters. Anything goes, as long as you look clean and tidy.

But in Britain, as well as the US, men in offices usually wear suits and ties, and women wear dresses or skirts (not trousers). Doctors, lawyers and business people always wear quite formal clothes. And in some hotels and restaurants men have to wear ties and women wear tidy dresses.

In many ways, Americans are more relaxed(輕松的) than British people, but they are more careful with their clothes. At home, or on holiday, most Americans wear informal or sports clothes. New York City consists of five boroughs（行政區(qū)）: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queen, the Bronx and Staten Island. The population of Manhattan is about 7.5 million. Manhattan, the centre of the city, is on an island between the Hudson River and the East River. Most of the famous buildings such as the Empire State Building and the United Nations Building and other skyscrapers are in Manhattan. O. Henry was an American short-story writer, a master of surprising endings, who wrote about the life of ordinary people in New York City. A twist of plot, which turns on an ironic or coincidental circumstance, is typical of O. Henrys stories.

William Sydney Porter (O. Henry) was born in North Carolina. His father was a physician. When William was three, his mother died, and he was raised by his grandmother and aunt. At the age of fifteen he left school, and then worked in a drug store. He moved to Houston, where he had a number of jobs, including that of bank clerk. After moving to Austin, Texas, in 1882, he married.

In 1884 he started a humorous weekly The Rolling Stone. When the Weekly failed, he joined the Houston Post as a reporter and columnist. In 1897 he was convicted of embezzling money, although there has been much debate over his actual guilt.

While in prison O. Henry started to write short stories to earn money to support his daughter Margaret. His first work, Whistling Dicks Christmas Stocking(1899), appeared in McClures Magazine. After doing three years of the five years sentence, Porter emerged from the prison in 1901 and changed his name to O. Henry.

O. Henry moved to New York city in 1902 and from December 1903 to January 1906 he wrote a story a week for the New York World, also publishing in other magazines. Henrys first collection, Cabbages And Kings appeared in 1904. The second, The Four Million, was published two years later and included his well-known stories The Gift of the Magi and The Furnished Room. O. Henry published 10 collections and over 600 short stories during his lifetime.

O. Henrys last years were shadowed by ill health and financial problems. He married Sara Lindsay Coleman in 1907, but the marriage was not happy, and they separated one year later. O. Henry died on June 5, 1910, in New York.

What Is Love

Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses. So, I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are very busy trying to earn money to pay the high schooling for me. They dont act in the romantic ways that I read in books or see on TV, and sending flowers to each other on Valentines Day is even impossible.

One day, my mother was sewing a quilt. I asked her if there was love between them. She paused her work and raised her head with surprise. Then she bowed her head and continued sewing the quilt.
