There was great excitement at Thorby police station. The inspector had received a phone call from an informer（通報者）. The man said that a gang（幫、伙） intended to rob the main post office. He even told the inspector the date and time for which the robbery was planned. The Thorby police were not used to serious crimes（罪）. Except for occasional cases of apple stealing, their peace was seldom disturbed（打擾）. Hardly did anything more serious happen.

The robbery was going to take place at two oclock on market day. The informer said that one of the gang would have a revolver. This worried the inspector most of all. There are many problems connected with space travel. The first and greatest of them is gravity. If you let your pencil drop to the floor, you can see gravity in action. Everything is down to the earth by magnetic force（磁力）. The weight of something is another way of describing the amount of force exerted（施加壓力） on it by gravity. A rocket must go at least 2,500 miles an hour to take anyone beyond the gravity of the earth into space.

What does the typical（典型的） American or Canadian usually eat? Most people think that the typical North American diet（飲食） consists of（由……構(gòu)成） fast foods—hamburgers and French fries. It also includes convenience (n.方便) foods, usually frozen of canned, “junk food” without much food value—candy, potato chips—and so on. People are eating less red meat and fewer eggs, and they are eating more chicken and fish. Some foods might cause health problems, and people want to stay away from them.

For health reason, many people are also buying more fresh vegetables. They may eat them without cooking them first, or they might cook them quickly in very little water because they want to keep the vitamins（維生素）.

The “typical” North American diet now includes food from many different countries. More ethnic（不同民族的） restaurants are opening in big cities in the United States and Canada. Foods from Japan, Thailand, Mexico, West Africa, China, and India are very popular. At lunch time, many people go to ethnic fast-food places for a quick bite.

How are we going to eat in the future? We will probably continue to eat more fish and vegetables and less meat. We will still buy convenience foods, but frozen foods will be better for our health, and canned foods will have less salt and sugar. Our “junk food” in the future is not really going to be “junk” at all, because instead of candy bars we are going to eat“nutrition bars” with a lot of vitamins and protein（蛋白質(zhì)）. In the future, our diet will probably be even more interesting and healthful than it is now.
