The setting is a small town of Irish immigrants near Chicago in 1931， one ofthe Depression years in America. Michael Sullivan， Sr is a professionalkiller fiercely loyal to John Rooney， his surrogate father and a gentlemanlymob leader who brought him up and gave his family a big house， but he neverallows his“Angel of Death”image to affect his happy family life——he is the lovinghusband for Annie and the doting father of two adolescent sons， Michael Sullivan，Jr and Peter.c His sons， however， are curious about what he does for Rooney， for itseems he never leaves home without carrying a gun. One day， Michael Sullivan， insneaks into the car his father Sullivan is driving on a mission with Connor，Rooney's ruthless and hot-tempered son by birth2. When Connor loses his controland kills the man his father told him just to“talk to”， Sullivan has to help himknock off3 the others on the scene. Michael， the accidental witness to the scene ofbrutality， is devastated by what he saw.
