Apple has always been known for challenging conventions in the computer industry, but at this year's Macworld event in San Francisco, CEO Steve Jobs raised the bar for laptop manufacturers everywhere when he announced the MacBook Air – the thinnest commercial computer in the world.
Less than an inch thick and weighing in at only three pounds, the slender, tapering shape of the Air conceals some fine hardware- 2 GBs of RAM, an 80GB hard drive and a 13.3-inch LED screen. While not the most powerful computer on the market, it is certainly one of the most stylish.
\"When you first see the MacBook Air, it's hard to believe it's a high-performance notebook with a full-size keyboard and display, but it is\" said Jobs. \"In fact, this is possibly the best notebook keyboard we've produced.\"
The Air, retailing at $1,799, is already making waves, with hundreds of orders being placed at Macworld alone. Kansas City resident Barbara Rosker told the San Francisco Chronicle: \"Everyone's been waiting for an ultralight from Apple, and this exceeds expectations. Being a woman, I don't like to carry something too heavy. I'm convinced Apple make the best laptops, and (the Air's) size and weight are terrific.\"
The Air is set to transform the world of notebook computing, by doing away with an in-build optical drive – no more CDs or DVDs for the Mac! Instead, Apple are releasing a whole set of applications allowing Air users to survive without any kind of wiring; as well as a massive five-hour battery life (most lightweight laptops can only manage two hours) and no Ethernet port, the Air is capable of downloading movies from the internet via iTunes, backing up files on Time Capsule, and installing new programmes via a wireless network connection.
Users can even access their home Mac desktop using the new \"Back to my Mac\" application, allowing them to view files from home while they are on the road.
Of course, for those still wanting to watch DVDs and rip music, Apple is offering an external optical drive for the Mac as well- for an extra $99. It also has a USB 2.0 port, and a connection allowing users to watch movies on other Apple monitors.
Other innovations include a whole new trackpad system that allows users to use many different gestures to perform tasks- pinch the pad to zoom in and out, stroke it lightly to flip through document pages, and roll your fingers over it to rotate pictures. The Air is an exercise in user interaction, designed to be as convenient and self-contained as possible.
In short, the MacBook Air is going to herald a whole new generation of notebook computers. If the decision to get rid of the optical drive pays off – as did Apple's decision to ditch floppy drives in the '90s – then we can expect to move into a wire-free era by the end of the decade.
